Barack Obama '51 percent watch': Waiting on NYC to put him over the top

I haven't done one of these since Friday, 12 state certifications ago. California is down to just 175,000 uncounted ballots. Almost everyone else is all in. The only big cache left of votes is in New York, where 800,000 to 1 million votes, most in New York City, remain to be counted.
The current tally is Barack Obama 50.94, Mitt Romney 47.32. Those NYC ballots will almost assuredly push Obama past the 51 percent mark—the first president to manage that feat twice since Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Obama's popular vote margin is 4.6 million. Hopefully NYC pushes it past five million, just because it's always fun to have yet one more reason to celebrate. Remember this?

You know there are still wingnuts out there who think that Obama barely won the popular vote. I read some post on a RW site the other day that said Obama won by less than 1% of the vote.

His lead keeps growing, it should be on the news, you know it would be if his lead was shrinking for 4 weeks.

Happened just before the election and did a lot of damage. I'm really pleased that people voted and that the ballots were collected -- and are being counted.

A lot made it to the polls no matter what, but there were no doubt quite a lot in NY and NJ who just could not get there. And I'm sure more of them were Obama votes than that other guy. So when they say Obama got fewer votes than in '08, which is a favorite talking point of the bitterly disappointed, it's good to remember that in two of the states that he carried easily his numbers probably would have been even higher if not for the storm.

if their usual place was unavailable due to the storm.

I think they got paper provisional ballots to use so it's a manual verification/counting process. Had it mattered re: NYS's EV, I imagine they would've poured a lot more workers into it immediately. (The last time NYC went for a Republican was Dewey/Truman, IIRC)

I was very glad to see your post not only because of its substance but because I was about to post something along similar lines based on less up to date and less detailed information.

That I saw your post has quite likely saved me from making a fool of myself.

Irrespective, that Obama continues to increase his lead both in terms of raw number of votes and as a percentage as more votes continue to come in is not only encouraging, but is worth thinking about, and worth keeping in mind for future elections.

It was not just Obama whose numbers have in creased with late counted votes.

At one point there were eight undecided congressional races. Democrats lead in 7, and the Republican lead in 1. The Democrats finished by winning all 8, and generally increasing the margins in the races in which they had lead. Democrats seem to do better with late counted votes.

Why, and what does this mean?

A large part of it has to be absentee votes. Frequently absentee voters are better informed, and usually somewhat more exposed to more than the mainstream media, so it makes sense that these votes (including, and contrary to Republican assumptions, military absentee votes) to break Democratic.

Therefore,

(1) in close elections future, take heart, the trends are in our favor.

(2) although early voting has clearly helped Democrats, and appropriately so, there is also something to be said for traditional voting simply so that the early numbers will not be so skewed toward the Republicans--think those early numbers don't have an influence on called races? I think that they do.

Again, thank-you for your post.

20. Provisional ballots

Dec 2012

Isn't it perhaps more about provisional ballots than absentee? I have no proof in hand, but in many places it's reported that Dems are more likely to make up the bulk of provisionals, since, frankly, Dems are the ones being targeted by various suppression efforts on the GOP's behalf (long lines, voter id laws, broken machines, etc).

I think since 2000 the GOP strategy has been to suppress votes or delay them long enough to start screaming and bullying their way into office before Dems have a chance. Kinda how a football team knows if they give the other team time to challenge a play/score, they might lose, so they rush ahead and hope they're fast enough to push through.

Peace.
