Georgia shatters early voting recordTim Darnell , WXIA 2:08 AM. EST November 06, 2016
ATLANTA, Ga -- More than 2,180,000 votes have been cast in Georgia through advance and early voting, smashing the states previous record set in 2008.
Secretary of State Brian Kemp said the total will continue to climb through the end of Friday, when early and advance voting ended. Georgias previous record was 2,129,316.
Whats telling is that, in terms of early voters, Fulton and DeKalb are far ahead of their early voting numbers from the last election, said Emory professor of political science Alan Abramowitz. If early voting is an indicator of actual turnout, it could mean well see a high turnout from Georgias two most heavily Democratic counties.

(24,653 posts)I'm willing to bet that shattered 2012's numbers. If I recall correctly, we had 62% turnout overall in that election. I find it hard to believe only 12% will show up on Election Day.

(22,671 posts)Curious, because I haven't been able to drill into the EV numbers from any other state than Nevada, which posts EV and previous election results by county, by party, and in ratio. If Florida has something like that to work with, it might tell us where there are some democratic counties, more than others, that HFA needs to focus on for canvassing.

(24,653 posts)Only thing I've seen come out of Florida was that exit poll that claimed 27% of Republican voters had crossed the aisle. However, the sample size was miniscule.

(10,252 posts)Tired of white racist Republicans trying over and over to suppress the vote. Right now, we fight all their tricky little voter ID, and closing down voting poll places to suppress the vote. Next time, we go after gerrymandered districts.

(129,142 posts)have always had black populations ranging from 20% - 40% of the STATE populations. These were the traditional "slave states" and were always considered the "black belt" of the United States -
Alternately, the state with the largest population (CA) that is also our largest blue state, has a black population of a mere 6.5%, less than supposed "deep red" states like Oklahoma (black population = 7.8%) or Kentucky (black population = 8.3%).
The state of Georgia is 32% black and 9.4% Hispanic. That comes out to 41% POC right there - statewide. There is NO fucking reason other than PSTD from generational memories of Jim Crow & current Jim Crow re-animated, that is keeping that state "red".

(520 posts)We have the largest percentage of black Americans in the country (37%). It's also the poorest state. MS should be deep blue, but decades of neglect from white politicians in both parties has led to significant apathy about voting among the black population, and rampant racism has poor people voting Republican regularly. The current polling has Trump up only in single digits here. That's pretty remarkable for this state.

(129,142 posts)Exactly... And sadly I heard that reflected back in 2008 when the media held one of the debates in Mississippi and they interviewed folks in the area... and many blacks were like "Why bother?" or "No I'm not planning to vote".
MS was the home to Medgar Evers who was assassinated for trying to enfranchise black folk, as well as the home of Fannie Lou Hamer who battled the Democratic party in the '60s just to attend a convention. And although that was 50-some years ago, there is apparently still a bitter taste regarding the boll weevils.
As I noted - some severe PTSD going on.

(216 posts)I live in a RED county...Rural, mostly agricultural base, overwhelmingly white--you would think your typical Trump paradise. Generally, I tend to think of my vote in this county as symbolic--very few Democrats, much less liberals ever win here. When I went to cast my vote, there was an older man, probably in his 70's, obviously a farmer, standing at one of the kiosks. He asked the poll worker "If I cast my vote for Hillary, and then don't vote for anyone else on the ballot, does that count against me?" I was so surprised and happy to hear that this man was a Hillary voter, I broke out into a huge smile.
