2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is why we keep losing and it has to stop now!
We can't let the chuck Shumer become or stay the leader of anything in the Democratic party. He is clearly more concerned about well off republican than Democrats.
For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.
Those decades long rust belt working class Democrats knew damn well that the corporate dems did not represent them.
RKP5637
(67,112 posts)used to represent them, but that really changed over the years. They want change and are willing to risk sinking the ship for a new direction. My fear is they're heading us right over a cliff.

(36,223 posts)The DEMS do represent them than any Republican, they just decide they like repubs better for some reason... hmmmmm.... For whatever reason that may be... oh let's say bigotry...

(3,251 posts)The media pushing Trump 24/7 and the WOMAN HATRED of the aggrieved white dudes are the reasons for this mess.

(44,164 posts)Dean can work full time and he has a great track record.
Please note HRC lost Pennsylvania by 1.1%. Not good but let's not get too hyperbolic about it. We can do better though.

(9,905 posts)Not the insurance lobbyist dean! Not the so fucking what if the people of Vermont voted for sanders, I'm going to cast my super delegate vote for Hillary Dean. The "no we can't" wing of the party has brought us an enormous failure.
He is not the right person. We have to stop trying to rehash these failed old farts.
emulatorloo
(44,164 posts)Of course your first impulse is to smear Dean. He didn't endorse Bernie.
Nor did Elizabeth Warren, Russ Finegold, Sherrod Brown. You may want to purge these "old farts" but IMHO that's what my late mama called "cutting off your nose to spite your face."
In 2004 Dean was our Bernie. He is eminently qualified. He's a fighter and he knows how to win. Ellison is terrific and I stand by my statement they will make a great team.
MelissaB
(16,420 posts)to come back to the party this needs to at least be thought about. I know lifelong Democrats who left the party when they saw how dirty the primary was. Yes, it did have something to do with Dean for the reasons mentioned above and every other superduper voter (super delegate) who lined up for Hillary before the first votes were cast. This election has been an eye opener.

(24,135 posts)because they took Sanders at his word - which was "he'd never run as a Democrat" and maybe that part about his threat to primary President Obama might have had something to do with it.
He wanted to take over the party and turn it into the Democratic Socialist Party and Democrats said Hell NOT!
Why would my Senator who received more than a million votes in a midterm bend to 72,000 mostly new voters?
I do hope you all form your own party - just praying it won't be called The Berniecrat Party for obvious reasons.
You're advocating that Bernie supporters form their own third party?
Isn't there a rule some where...?
Support Democrats
Do not post support for Republicans or independent/third-party "spoiler" candidates.
Why would we bend to new voters?
Well... I can name a few reasons...
Michigan - Sanders
Wisconsin - Sanders
Indiana - Sanders
Michigan - Trump
Wisconsin - Trump
Indiana - Trump
Like it or not, Bernie with his I next to his name is part of our party. Bernie appealed to a base that Clinton didn't. So glad that WE ("you all" are not welcome in your vision of the party. We'll keep that in mind.

That is disgusting and I hope to hell you don't actually believe that.

Those who will suffer are black, Hispanic, disabled, Muslim, etc... you know who damn well will suffer because these white brats decided to protest.
I will never forgive them for treating my son like shit when he changed from Bro to Hill.
I give them credit for their computer skills and clever memes tho....here enjoy...https://www.google.com/search?q=hillary+memes&rlz=1C1CHZL_enUS694US694&espv=2&biw=1530&bih=714&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiMtpv6xrDQAhVV5WMKHQzRBjkQ_AUIBigB
Your candidate had a lower turn out across the board. Pretending she lost because of white privilege is a load of garbage.
These generalizations don't stick and Schumer promised that those very privileged white suburbanites would turn out for Hill at double from whatever she lost in the poor and working class voters.
She had a lower turn out across the board. People were warned that she did not enthuse people. She did what I, and many other people warned about. She excited the republicans and she depressed the base and voter turn out. These are facts. I am sorry if this is inconvenient.
I did show up and vote for her in the general. I was not enthused but I did show up and vote for her.
The fact of the matter is that you do not seem to support progressive policy or at least you seem to mock it now that the election is over. I don't know why. If it is self-hate then I think you need to take some time off. But if you really hate the policies that excited the working class and young people than I don't know what to tell you.

The opposition, Coloradans for Coloradans, received the majority of its funding from insurance companies, including Anthem, Kaiser Permanente, United Healthcare Services and Centura Health.

Until it hits in their own lives, they have no idea what any of this is. They think it is all some new perverse custom designed by city slickers to wreck their traditional family lifestyle. For some reason, they think they are the only real family people. They are rigid about this mindset because it has seen them through some tough times.
As a woman who grew up in Chicago and then married a country boy, I think I have some insights. Sixty-two years ago, I was a small child living in Chicago, with a stepgrandfather who was gay. One of my real grandfathers had deserted the family long before that, an that grandmother eventually married an old friend and fellow poet who was gay, either because they each needed a roommate to make it financially or because he needed a spouse to obtain an inheritance. It wasn't called "gay" back then, but that is what he was. I have a vague memory of my mother explaining to me and my little brother that our grandmother was getting married, and that we must watch out because neighborhood kids might laugh at our new grandpa, and we must be careful never to laugh at him with them. She said he was a man who had been afraid of women but had decided to try being married to get over that. I asked, why was he afraid of women, and she told us the prevailing theory of that time where we lived, that when he was a baby some dastardly bad woman must have found a moment when his mother was distracted to hurt him in his peepee. I was horrified! Hurted by a bad woman! Like everyone else in my family, I felt strong sympathy for anyone victimized that way. We saw gay people as victims of injustice, who found themselves in a terrible situation through no fault of their own. I felt a real desire to smile pretty at him and move gently around him, to help him get over this trauma. I was a small child, so all I remember is a quiet little man who sat at our family Christmas parties politely for a few years, until they divorced amicably.
I think that gay people, for many generations, have been flocking to the cities for refuge, and sending vague letters back home to their rural families, pretending to be celibate straight people who had just never met the right person to marry. Therefore, those rural people never knew how many gay people there really were. And the only gay people they knew about were city dwellers. As for trans people, I was talking to a young woman about gay marriage, and she was adamantly against anything but the old rigid man-woman one. I informed her that some people have characteristics of both sexes, and asked her, "What are THEY supposed to do? and how are THEY supposed to feel?" She was shocked into silence, apparently never having heard of that occurrence. Then, another woman, whom I had always considered unusually open-minded for a small town, hesitantly volunteered that one of her cousins was like that.

(4,307 posts)In the rural North, especially the Midwest, there were almost no Black people and not many Latinos. And even, of course, few Native Americans; the shameful reason for this was not mentioned, with a widespread fantasy that European families had found an empty land which they had carved into a society by hard work. Northern rural whites mostly do their own dirty work; they are proud of their self-sufficiency and boast that they are not afraid to get their hands dirty and calloused. They have this whole rigid system set up, with carefully scripted and supervised courtships ending in marriages with several children, bolstering and perpetuating a kinship system that benefitted them all. Women and men both had important socially prescribed roles to fill in this system, and every baby counted. In their worldview, each baby in these rural families had been specifically designed by God to fill one of these sex roles. The men form one army into which they are drafted at birth and carefully trained and indoctrinated; the woman form another and equally rigid fellowship. At school musical programs I have attended, the little girls would sing and smile ingratiatingly; the little boys would jam their hands into their pockets, thrust their chins out defiantly, and growl the words gruffly. It was no accident that Trump kept bellowing at that last debate about the babies being ripped from their mothers' wombs. I heard rural people around me saying they would vote for Trump because of the disgusting lifestyles being championed and pushed on them by godless liberals, with everybody shirking work and running amok and losing all self-control. THAT is what they think they are seeing.
Of course, we cannot just allow ourselves to be cowed into supporting bigotry or white supremacy. I wonder if it might be helpful to somehow showcase the many Black rural families in our country who work hard and build and repair things, and also are not afraid to get their hands dirty and calloused. And that there are many Latinos and Native Americans who are like that. And city people. Somehow get them to see that we are more like them than they think. And show support for their legitimate issues. And show that we know they are not the stupid fools depicted in some movies and tv shows. Although, right now, I have to admit that the word "stupid" keeps coming to mind a lot. Since they apparently cannot see that Trump is just a super city slicker con man. He certainly has snookered them. Right now, I am not saying anything to them because I am still pretty angry. I am waiting for my anger to subside and trying to think of something to say to these people.

(3,251 posts)Do you understand you cannot REASON with these people AT ALL? They weren't Democrats anyway. They are not intelligent for the most part, just entitled MEN who think women have no business in the labor force. Many of them are MRA types and "identified" with Trump because he is an entitled male asshole just like they are.
You can't fix their stupidity by pandering to them. The 1950s are NEVER coming back. The jobs are not coming back because outfits like the World Bank and IMF wouldn't allow it. The time to have pushed back on neoliberalism was the 1980s, but these same stupid dudes were enthralled with Ronald Reagan.
What you are really saying but won't admit it is that Democrats should never nominate a woman ever again as president because these entitled white dudes will not vote for a woman candidate.

(6,976 posts)Excellent post.
I'm tired of hearing that we as a party have to go back to the 1950's and pacify those who want their country back. What exactly does wanting their country back MEAN?
Secondly, while many who voted for tRump may not be racist but be extremely nervous about their lives and jobs and families security which is understandable, and just because tRump gave them "HOPE," it was okay for them to co-sign the bigotry and racism emitting from tRump and that Nazi Bannon? I mean the KKK and White Nationalist groups are happy with and endorsed tRump.
I mean, what are those voters who voted for tRump saying exactly?

Trade deals killed the Rust Belt over a span of 3+ decades. Exactly how much does anyone on this board think people will take? PA went to Obama twice. It has a Democratic governor. McGinty (female) came within about 1.7 per cent of beating incumbent Toomey (male). They're not all suddenly sexist racists. Racist sexists?

Trump gave them hope. He said were are going to smelt steel again. We are going to mine coal. We are going to build those cars here.
We all know that even if we do start making a lot of steel here, the jobs are NOT coming back. Automation means one person can now so the job of ten or twenty. However these people are hoping he can deliver. They NEED SOMETHING to believe in, and Trump gave it to them. When it fails, and it will, they will hold him accountable.
When Democrats.find a way to support the working man again, we will win. We cannot be a party of college professors and suburban my moms.
