2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI threw up for 3 days after the election...and have taken to listening to Gregorian Chants on
my car's CD player...the chants are at least soothing and were probably used to enhance meditation in monasteries in the middle ages. Puts things in perspective
Also calling Hildegarde of Bingen but I'm sure her stuff is on you tube.
Anybody got anything better to do?

(115,732 posts)I am a member of a small choral group that performs early music, including Gregorian chant and similar things. It really is soothing to do music; you can't think about other things when you're singing. And just listening is so soothing.
BTW, Hildegard von Bingen was an amazing woman. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hildegard_of_Bingen There's a group called Anonymous 4 that has done an excellent recording of some of her music, The Origin of Fire.

It must be a marvelous outlet for you. You are right you just get "lost in that sensual music" to throw W.B.Yeats in the mix here...

(115,732 posts)These dark days it's especially important, for the sake of one's sanity, to take time to do, participate in and appreciate things that are beautiful. And sometimes the greatest art can come out of the worst circumstances.
The composer Olivier Messaien wrote a wonderful piece of music while he was a prisoner of war in WWII:
Since we are probably going to be in the shit for the next few years, the arts will be more important than ever - to help us remember that it's not all shit.

(92,217 posts)representatives and senators that this is NOT business as usually
First things I did the day after the election was to downgrade my Satellite service so I essentially just get locals. No CNN, no MSNBC, no fox, no cnbc. They were part of the problem, and I refuse to patronize them. Next, I sent a donation to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. These groups are going to need all the help they can get. Finally, I sent emails to my Senators, and representative, along with letters to Schumer, and other Democrats telling them that I expect them not to compromise on social security, medicare, healthcare, or the environment. They must do whatever is necessary, and if that means obstruct, block or delay, then do it.
For my personal sanity I can escape into my music, but also getting outdoors and hiking are great ways to focus
I plan to fight them every inch of the way I can the next four years, and though it is an uphill battle, I will fight for us in two years for the Senate
We are going into a very dark period, but I will do what little I can to fight it
I am over the grief stage, and I am angry as hell. I will NEVER accept these racists

(36,926 posts)That plus hanging out with my family, especially grandkids, helps a lot. I now feel fairly detached from the whole horror. Or I feel detached enough to function. Fear creeps in, but I know how to get through it.

My husband and I have been picking up these laser lights--colored green and red for Christmas, but the predominant color is green. I also have a very old hot tub that has saved my back on one more than one occasion. So. We have set up these laser lights all over my back yard--it makes the few leaves left on the neighbors Magnolia trees sparkle, they climb up poles and dance on my backyard shed, The fence and the place I have my raspberries. It is absolutely magical--so I sit out there in hot pulsing water and dancing fairy lights and read...I am Reading a number of things, from Clive Barker horror and fantasy, to books on economics.
Been playing a lot of Mine-Sweeper too.

(51,308 posts)Wow.
One thing I'm learning is that many DUers are not very resilient.
So far I've read here that people are putting themselves on heavy anti-depressives, chainsmoking, not going to work, not getting out of bed, hinting at suicide...etc.
Wow. I had no idea.
No way that turd and his henchmen will have that kind of control over me.

(63,912 posts)which landed me in bed at Thanksgiving last year, one of the worst cases that my PCP ever saw. I am having an outpatient procedure done to implant a wire in my neck to basically interrupt the nerve pain.
Yeah, a year of constant pain can make you do all kinds of things, believe me...

Glad it wasn't because of the election.

And speaking of kids...pretty sure you were kidding lol.

(26,587 posts)I take Klonopin for an anxiety disorder. Lateley I've been taking 1-1/2 mg/day (2-3 tablets). I had a fresh prescription that day, and that night when I began to realize that we were probably losing, I went into near panic attack mode, so I took about 9 tablets, washed down with a bottle of beer. I honestly was so wired that I felt no effects from it. I tend not to feel the effects of even large doses of Klonopin when I'm pumping enough stress hormones.
My sons were not left alone with an intoxicated woman (which I was not), as we live with their grandmother who is coparenting them with me.
I can post pictures of my kids if you want, as well as the huge bag of candy wrappers that I went through.

By the Swedish group, Garmarna. It's a fusion of rock and chant. I have put the original Hildegard works against theirs and my god, they get it right.
I hope you enjoy this and it soothes your soul. And I hope you and yours are well.
The Virga ac diadema, cut 7, is incredible.
