Obama's Gun Push Takes Shape

President Obama "would actively support an impending proposal next year to reinstate a ban on assault weapons as part of the wide-ranging effort the president promised to initiate in response to mass shooting incidents this year," NBC News reports.

White House press secretary Jay Carney also said that Obama "was additionally willing to consider limiting the capacity of ammunition magazines and closing a loophole allowing individuals to purchase firearms at gun shows without a background check."

Marc Ambinder: Guns need good. Starve them.

2. Are you assuming he has the final say in all of this?

I'm sure you'd be wrong. I think the point is that action will finally be taken.

5. Being "willing to consider" is not taking action.

Nor did I say anywhere that Obama has final say in this. I was merely commenting on what his spokesman said.

9. Yea, and yours, along with a host of usual suspects, make comments

that are usually negative regarding Obama, regardless of topic. You apparently don't know how gov't works; it's laughable if you think he'll set his foot down and his will will be done. Standby; this might take awhile, especially with the usual suspects on the other side who will be kicking and screaming all the way. Hey, kind of like some people here!

4. It is not really going to be led by President Obama. It will most likely be heavily pushed by

the Senators in my state of CT, Dick Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. Obama simply has to give them the support they need. The assault weapon ban and the limiting of magazines may pass the Senate but it is the House where the real issues remain. President Obama cannot do anything about that.

Again - how courageous of Obama to be WILLING TO CONSIDER it.

But the people who will be fighting the loudest on this issue will be from Connecticut, as should be.

8. Yeah, it would be real big of the president to CONSIDER backing CT's senators on it

11. You seem very angry at the President.

Honestly, he was there for the people of my state with the eloquence, class, and grace I doubt Romney would be capable of. He was there for my Governor. Politics in general seems pretty petty to me the last few days.

3. "Actively supporting" and "willing to consider" is not a " gun push."

It is a "sit back and wait to see which way the wind blows."
