Gun control legislation tactic, focus on high capacity magazines...

As a pragmatic realist, I know that what purists may want is not achievable.

These mass killers feel they have been slighted. Their acts are about power, what they can not stand, is the embarrassment of being thwarted while fumbling to reload after they fail to inflict mass casualties, because they aren't even good shots.

Focus on the 33 - 100 capacity magazines.

Loughner: 33

Lanza: multiple 33s

Holmes: multiple 100s, in total 6,000 rounds of ammo, bought on the internet

Banning ammo is more achievable than banning particular guns.

Keep up the pressure using social media, LTEs, etc. They will want to talk about Lanza, because the guns belonged to mom. Don't forget James Holmes.

But leave the guns that could potentially use them on the shelves.

3. The guns are already out there, not fully automatic guns still fire 50-60 a minute

with maximum capacity clips.

If you don't have time to reload, you are a murdering sack of shit.

With that technology the .223 is indistiguishable from a fully automatic in my opinion.

Some perspective. An old DoD WWII training film indicated that the M1 (8 shot clip) was around 3 times as effective as a bolt action Springfield. Wonder how they would have rated a 30 round magazine .223 against non-protected close quarter targets?

There is a video circulating on what to do in a threat situation. It shows a guy using a pump action shotgun. Someone should make a comparable video as to what it is like to be fired upon with a 30 round magazine.

Ironically the 100 round drum magazine in Denver might have saved lives because the most dangerous weapon jammed. Don't want to count on that in the future. The only equivalent lethality to something like a 100 round drum magazine would be a bomb which is much harder to pull off.

4. Indeed, James Holmes's drum magazine...

‎"A second federal law enforcement official said James Holmes had a high-capacity ammunition magazine in the assault rifle. Oates said a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene. The type of ammunition magazine Holmes is accused of using was banned for new production under the old federal assault weapon ban, said Daniel Vice, senior attorney for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. WHEN THE BAN EXPIRED in 2004, GUN MANUFACTURERS FLOODED THE MARKET with the type of HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES Holmes used.

Oates said that experts told him "with that drum magazine, he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds, even if it was semiautomatic, within one minute. And as far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater."

Oates said Holmes purchased ammunition over the Internet, including thousands of rounds and multiple magazines for the assault rifle.

Authorities have said that Holmes had on an all-black ensemble of protective gear at the time of the shooting. An online seller of tactical police gear told the St. Louis Dispatch that it sold more than $300 of equipment, such as an assault vest, magazine pouches and a knife, to Holmes on July 2. Chad Weinman, the CEO of Missouri-based TacticalGear.com, said Friday that Holmes had purchased two-day shipping for the items. He said the expedited timing for the items showed "some relevance as to what kind of mindset he was in."

Holmes' gun purchases include:

-- On May 28, six days after purchasing the Glock, Holmes purchased the shotgun used in the shootings from Bass Pro Shops in Denver.

-- On June 7, Holmes bought the AR-15 assault rifle at a Gander Mountain store in Thornton, Colo.

-- On July 6, Holmes returned to the Bass Pro Shops store in Denver and bought the other Glock pistol

is a photo showing the .223 with a 30 round magazine in it lying on the ground (see http://photos.denverpost.com/2012/07/20/photos-shooting-at-aurora-theater/#7). Did he try to unjam it and insert a 30 round magazine?

Schedule them under Title II of the NFA so that people who wish to get licenses for them can with permission of local law enforcement. Offer buybacks at twice the current market price (this would cost a couple of billion dollars, but we could use the stimulus).

Banning ammo is more achievable than banning particular guns.

Just so we're on the same page: banning ammo may be a good idea, but that's not what you're advocating. You're talking about banning magazines, which are little boxes with springs in them into which you load ammo.

7. Yes banning high capacity mags & banning military body armor also more achievable.

I'm much more iffy about that; that's very literally entirely defensive equipment.

They dress in a manner that makes it difficult for LE to stop them. If you aren't SWAT, why do you need body armor? Vest, helmet, shin guards. How do you stop that, before thew ammo runs out.
