Question about online activism
In the last few years online petitions have been very effective. I've experienced great success with them, personally. Yet in the last six months or so there seems to have been an explosion of online petitions, via Facebook Causes and websites which exist solely as petition platforms.
I fear online petitions are becoming ineffective because so many petitions are now created for the same issue -- across various sites and tools -- perhaps making the myriad petitions less effective than if one huge petition were compiled.
Do you feel this fragmentation of efforts (which is a problem I see in nearly EVERYTHING) is hurting this previously valuable tool? Do you envision an evolution of online activism?
I know we need boots on the ground, but social media is still tremendously influential.
I'm wondering what the next stage could be, in the form of a more unified, cohesive approach to tackle each issue?
So many websites and organizations...so many issues...it becomes like white noise.
Or maybe it's just me?
