Gingrich focusing on 'soft delegates,' considering shared ticket with Santorum to challenge Romney: Wis. campaign director

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- With Newt Gingrich unlikely to pick up many delegates in the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday, his state campaign director, Robert Lorge, said his mission after that vote will be to help the former House speaker persuade what he calls "soft delegates" to support him.

"Newt is going to be focusing on soft delegates, unbound delegates, and of course all of the delegates are unbound after the second ballot," Lorge told FOX Gingrich has said he will remain in the race until Mitt Romney wins the 1,144 delegates that would secure him the Republican nomination. Lorge believes Romney will not reach that threshold, leading to a contested Republican National Convention this August.
"This election is going to be very much like 1920's Warren Harding Republican Convention," he said. "General Leonard Wood went in there with 30 percent of the delegates and thought he had it made. Warren Harding went in with six percent of the delegates. After ten ballots, Harding had 70 percent."
Lorge told FOX News that in conference calls with the national team there has been discussion about the possibility of consolidating Gingrich's delegates with those won by Rick Santorum in order to overcome Romney's delegate lead.
"I imagine there's going to be a lot of negotiation and compromising between the pro-Newt Gingrich and the pro-Rick Santorum delegates," he said. "You may have a Newt Gingrich-Rick Santorum ticket. You may have a Rick Santorum-Newt Gingrich ticket. Nobody knows how that ticket's going to work out. But I imagine it'll end up being something like that."

(63 posts)This new tact of his won't work. For some time Gingrich was pushing the meme that the total of his and Santorum's votes exceeded those of Rmoney. I'm not sure that's still the case especially in upcoming States like Wisconsin that has less far right evangelicals. It will be interesting to see where Rmoney lands for the VP choice. He has so many weaknesses to cover but I don't see him picking either Gingrich or Santorum. Either of them would no doubt cost Rmoney at least 5 more points in the general.

(31,706 posts)Cause once its over it's off to Palookaville. Nooooot's wild ego ride has gone from being down and out to top of the rock and back down again and he's enjoyed every self-centered, narcissistic moment. It's helped him sell lots of his worthless books and videos and get his face on the teevee...when this ride ends he'll become history in a hurry as both the world and his corrupt and inept party will move on. This has been Nooooot's wet dream...so close yet so far...
What a shame...now he'll have to take his "wife" Cealis back to the department store she came from...they've been wanting their manequin back...

(101,320 posts)I thought you couldn't have a ticket with Pres and VP candidates resident in the same state. Not that they'd get the nomination anyway ...
