2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe republicans in congress will not agree to any deal in this budget negotiation. The media
is squawking that "lawmakers are working to avoid fiscal cliff...." - it's all bullshit, because the GOP will never compromise with any Democrat on anything.

(18,634 posts)If there is no chance to vote on something the GOP can keep saying the Democrats are the ones who wouldn't agree.
If it's put up the GOP has to either filibuster or vote it down - in front of the country.
I sure hope they do that tomorrow.
It's just show business but without it there is no proof the Repubs are responsible.

Republicans will end up with mud on their faces. They want to take from poor people.
That will not sit well.
In negotiations, you want to make sure that what you are demanding is morally the best outcome. And if it is, you will be strong.
That is why Obama and the Democrats should not sacrifice social or environmental programs to satisfy the greed of the Republicans. Americans know that our social and environmental programs are morally necessary. In the end, Americans will side with those that make the case for the greatest moral good in our nation.
The military could be cut considerably as could Homeland Security, the DEA and a number of other programs. Not pursuing marijuana-related crimes for at least a while would save some money. Cutting back just a bit on the personnel in airports might be possible without risking safety. Certainly closing some of our many, many bases overseas would save a lot of money.
There are so many things we could do. Imposing import taxes to benefit our social programs would be a great idea. We also need a transaction tax on the fast-trades on Wall Street. Will some trades simply be made overseas? Tax the trade at the point of origination.
We also should try to place a small tax on money taken out of the US and deposited or used overseas if that is legally possible.
These steps may take dropping out of some trade agreements, but I do not think that we can improve our deficit situation and increase employment in the US unless we tax imports. I would love to see someone suggest some other alternative, but the only thing I have been able to figure out is to tax imports. I think it will eventually be done. It's just a matter of time.
