IT was hard not to feel sorry for John Boehner, wounded, weepy, mercilessly flogged by Chris Christie. The miserable-looking Boehner was even scaring small children.
After squeaking out re-election as House speaker when crazed conservatives rebelled on Thursday, Boehner summoned gruff bonhomie as he presided at a ceremonial swearing-in for House members.
But some of the kids posing for pictures seemed a little alarmed at Boehners awkward pats, brusque small talk and barked orders when someone posed the wrong way.
The speaker opened his arms to help out Sean Duffy, a Republican congressman from Wisconsin who was juggling five small children and two stuffed animals. Duffy, who met his wife, Rachel, through MTV after they were on different seasons of The Real World, tried to hand over his young daughter, who recoiled.

(28,264 posts)Ms. Dowd, your act is getting really tiresome.
Biden and Obama are a team and back each other up.
She couldn't write something positive about the VP without putting Obama down?
I have never liked Dowd since she trashed Gore and Hillary.
I love Biden but why disrespect the President?

(34,857 posts)It's something these people are good at and have been doing it for years to ding the President.
Prior to 2008, the media hated the Clintons. They constantly mocked 'em, discussed their sexual lives, floated conspiracies and constantly hit them at every chance - and yes, so did people like Dowd.
But by 2008, the Clintons were now seen as the tool to Obama's success...he needed Hillary to be successful because without her, he could never claim the presidency. He needed her to be vice president. He needed her to campaign like hell for him. Then when Obama struggled in West Virginia and Kentucky, they said Hillary proved Obama couldn't connect with working class whites. Hillary. Hillary. Hillary.
When Obama was elected, the first thing the media did was then start comparing him to Bill Clinton. Obama isn't as empathetic as Bill. Why doesn't Obama schmooze like Bill? Why can't he 'feel our pain' like Bill? Bill made us feel good about ourselves! Obama? Meh.
Look it up. It was constantly said early in Obama's term.
Then, this past election, Obama needed Bill. Just like he needed Hillary. Bill was the only reason Obama won. Bill stepped in and saved the day! Obama needs to be more like Bill! Why isn't he more like Bill? Obama is too professory - Bill is an average guy! Bill is so better at explaining Obama's accomplishments than Obama ... why is that?
The same people who spent eight years vilifying the Clintons were now embracing 'em. I watched Joe Scarborough the day after Clinton's speech at the DNC and everything he said was to prop Clinton up and tear Obama down.
1. Obama is so far to the left of Clinton. Clinton understood compromise. Clinton understood how to govern.
2. Clinton is an amazing man for putting all the race-baiting the Obama campaign did behind him and support someone who obviously had nothing but awful things to say about him in 2008 (forgetting that Bill, like Obama, was just as culpable at times throughout the primaries in saying awful shit).
3. Obama has taken the Democratic Party to the extreme! Back in the 90s, Clinton would never dare divide like this convention has.
Now it's the same with Biden. Biden bails Obama out. Biden is the only reason this presidency is getting anywhere. Obama hasn't done one thing on his own - from getting elected, to reelected to making deals. It's also a reoccurring theme about his life prior to politics. Obama didn't get into Harvard and Columbia on his merit ... he's only gotten this far for, you know, certain reasons.
It's what they do.

(53,410 posts)I'm not talking about what she spews at President Obama, which I expected, but at Biden. She just can't help herself. All that praise and she ends with "Joe Biden has a valuable skill: He knows how to stoop to conquer."
She stopped being cuttingly witty a long time ago. Now she's just bitterly cutting.
