Romney had to pursue the theme of makers vs. takers, to get the Tea Party behind him, and had to bring up Benghazi at the debates, lest the wingnuts flail him for not doing so. Similarly, the GOP senators had to pursue these hearings.

The problem is that right-wing fantasy melts when confronted by someone who publicly pulls at its threads.

So they're embarrassed when they do, and deserted when they don't. Tough spot, for a politician.
