One surprise to me is that the House iss actually not being as obnoxious as the Senate was. This is a huge shift from say 5 years ago - when Lugar and Hagel were the ranking Republicans on the committee.

The current ranking member, Corker, who has been constructive in recent years is one of the few not completely insane Republicans there. He is chair having been on the committee 6 years - so there is no depth of experience. Lugar and Kerry had a very long term relationship spanning the 28 years Kerry was on the committee. The respect between them was obvious and I think their courteous behavior influenced the committee's culture.

Now, there are many tea party Republicans who have joined the committee, including Inofe, Rubio, Rand Paul, Flake and Johnson. To that throw in the ever worsening McCain. The Republican side of this committee is pretty dysfunctional. The really bad part of this is that Kerry and Lugar were both exceptionally good at moving Senators away from resolutions that could play havoc with our foreign policy - often by offering a quick acceptable alternative and explaining the dangers of the original.

The Senate tends to be more collegiate and she was a popular member of the chamber. Then I remembered that the Tea Party jerks were not in office when she was in the Senate.

I'm watching her in front of the House (C-Span is repeating the proceedings) right now and they have been more polite than the asshats in the Senate like Paul and Johnson.

Good for Hillary for standing up to them. Even if seating at a lower level having to "look up" to them.

The first was the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the second was the House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired on this occasion by Senator Bob Menendez and Congressman Ed Royce, respectively.
