2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDems in purple states with red state governments could force recall elections
Suppose they petition to recall the legislators and governors that are trying to change
the electoral system? Force them all to go through another election. Make a big stink about what they
are doing and how they are subverting the will of the people. A recall election will give a lot of publicity
to what they are doing and at least give the people the power to oppose it. Otherwise, we are looking
at a Constitutional amendment to stop this new scheme to steal elections, which will be almost impossible.

(13,986 posts)It's not possible, for example, to recall a governor in Ohio, although it is in Wisconsin.
We Buckeyes are working to update the State Constitution to allow for recalls, but it's gonna take a while: especially since the people in charge of allowing ballot initiatives are all Reeps.
I hope everyone in a state with recall laws does as the OP suggests!

(5,167 posts)I'd love to see the possibility of recalls in Ohio, but inasmuch as the redistricting proposal in Ohio did not pass in the 2012 election, I don't see recall making it any time soon, if we're depending on the voters to approve it. The redistricting proposal was not even close, to my great dismay.

(13,986 posts)Something to work on. Other states that can do recalls don't always succeed, too. When you're living in a Reep- occupied territory, nothing about change is easy.

(13,986 posts)Ohio has it tougher than most, but your idea is worth pursuing. We just have to adapt to local conditions.

(6,407 posts)we need to register everyone and try and vote out the GOP state legislatures and governorships where we can. The GOP has been really smart about this.

(6,407 posts)Maybe that is where we need to start - the next midterm.

(5,167 posts)Obama's organization, with its vast database and knowhow, has now been made available to the Democratic Party and should be fully utilized, starting now, to get out the vote in 2014.
I'll never understand why that data was not used in 2010, especially knowing that redistricting would be taking place following the 2010 census. Perhaps the Dems didn't recognize the severe threat of Reps/Tea Party at that time. In this case, too late smart.

(2,730 posts)does a Governor have in Ohio if that state was to elect a Democratic Governor in the State next Election? Would he or she have the power to call a referendum or iniative to change the State Constitution? And what about the same in other States like Pennsylvannia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Virginia or even North Carolina to reverse what those Republican Legislatures do by getting the majority of the people in those states to vote. Wouldn't that be the same as the marijuana Ballots in other states?

(5,167 posts)Not sure about power of an Ohio governor to call a constitutional convention, but doubtful.
Ohio voters also voted down in 2012 a call for a state constitutional convention. - It was a mandatory issue, as Ohio laws declares that such a state convention must be available every 10 yrs if the voters want it.
Ohio laws seem to be more stringent than others, perhaps because Ohio came in the Union earlier than those further west. I've noticed that the further East a state is, the fewer such powers are given to officials and populace, while the laws are more relaxed in that manner the further West the state is.

(19,537 posts)It sounds like they are putting in (or trying to put in) new laws that will make it harder for them to be recalled.
