Top G.O.P. Donors Seek Greater Say in Senate Races.

The biggest donors in the Republican Party are financing a new group to recruit seasoned candidates and protect Senate incumbents from challenges by far-right conservatives and Tea Party enthusiasts who Republican leaders worry could complicate the party’s efforts to win control of the Senate.

The group, the Conservative Victory Project, is intended to counter other organizations that have helped defeat establishment Republican candidates over the last two election cycles. It is the most robust attempt yet by Republicans to impose a new sense of discipline on the party, particularly in primary races.

“There is a broad concern about having blown a significant number of races because the wrong candidates were selected,” said Steven J. Law, the president of American Crossroads, the “super PAC” creating the new project. “We don’t view ourselves as being in the incumbent protection business, but we want to pick the most conservative candidate who can win.”

The effort would put a new twist on the Republican-vs.-Republican warfare that has consumed the party’s primary races in recent years. In effect, the establishment is taking steps to fight back against Tea Party groups and other conservative organizations that have wielded significant influence in backing candidates who ultimately lost seats to Democrats in the general election.

Looking forward to a lot of infighting. Maybe corporations and right wing groups will get confused about who to support? Maybe this will result in crazy religious zealots being ousted out of politics.

The better. Their obsession with contraception and LGBT is sickening. I feel like telling everyone if them that their cotton blend shirts are not God-approved.

Sooner or later, their money's going to buy them a few elections, and we'll be in trouble. Yes there's a delicious irony in watching the repukes' infighting, but there may come a day when the worm turns--on us. Just watch these people like hawks, and keep fighting the progressive fight!

But for now, enjoy a good on me!

Clearly the Republican Establishment has begun to wise up to the fact that having extreme Tea Party candidates hurts their prospects in Senate races and is trying to prevent another Todd Akin or Christine O'Donnell happening in 2014. We've been lucky in 2010 & 2012 to have crazy Senate candidates on the GOP side who implode during the general election.

It might not keep on happening forever. The DSSC needs to prepare strong Dem candidates who may have to run against 'normal' Republicans in 2014 and can't necessarily expect a Todd Akin to always fall into their laps as an opponent.
