Sanford is now engaged to the Argentine woman, Maria Belen Chapur.

Sanford is one of 16 Republicans running in the primary to replace now-Sen. Tim Scott. His ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, considered a bid for the seat before deciding not to run.

The district, in South Carolina's Lowcountry, is strongly Republican, and the winner of the GOP primary is likely to end up in Congress ...

career because he obviously fell helplessly in love with another woman and practically went to the ends of the earth to be with her. So many politicians are cynical and cold about their extramarital affairs and just use women and casually toss them aside.

I don't mean to imply that Sanford is some kind of saint. His kids were real losers in their father's infidelity. His wife, who strikes me as rather cold and remote, did not deserve to be humiliated publicly and in the worst way possible.

Now he wants his political career to be revived and maybe his going to the people in his district in a "sinner who knows he has sinned" context will work, altho the Argentine wife to be won't get easy acceptance, I'll bet. But you can't say the guy isn't fascinating...
