Chicago votes in House race dominated by gun control issue

By Renita Young
CHICAGO | Tue Feb 26, 2013 6:46am EST

(Reuters) - Chicago area voters on Tuesday choose a Democrat to succeed indicted former Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., in a race that has turned into the first major election clash on gun control since the Connecticut school massacre.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a champion of tighter gun controls, has poured more than $2 million from his political war chest into the contest in an effort to elect a candidate favoring tighter restrictions.

Jackson was a reliable vote in Congress for gun control. But early polls in the race to succeed him showed that the Democratic primary could be won by Debbie Halvorson, a candidate who has an "A" rating from the NRA and opposes a ban on assault weapons.

Bloomberg elbowed into the race, blanketing Chicago television with ads attacking Halvorson and endorsing Robin Kelly, who supports tighter gun restrictions.

A candidate can be supported by the NRA and not be a Republican?

Good to know.

Now I hope that she wins.

Hope the Great Equalizer goes state to state district to district and pulverizes all the NRA backed candidates.

The NRA is a blackmailing terror organization that needs to be banned like other terror groups,
and NOT give their mouthpieces any free airtime.

The NRA like the Knight who said Ni, is already dead. They just don't know it.

Here's hoping for a Gun-Free society in the USA soon like I am hoping for a 100% smoke-free
society.

Wish we had Mayor Bloomberg giving money to the candidates who are anti-gun the last 40 years and stopped the deadly NRA in its tracks.

Is it because of your bias towards firearms, their position on the second amendment, they're effectiveness?

Why do you express such adoration for Michael Bloomberg who is nothing more than a 1%? Why do you approve of such an authoritarian?

What other org. would you like to see labeled as a terror org.?

And before you ask, no, I don't and have never belonged to the NRA.

I can understtand why someone who defends the NRA doesn't like Mike Bloomberg.

It would be like a Met fan liking the Yankees. Unheard of.

I didn't defend the NRA, I asked a simple question, why would you label the NRA a terror org.?

How about answering the other questions also?
And why do you care how many days I've been here? What does that have to do with the questions at hand?

And you still refuse to answer the questions pending.

Seems you can't defend your position if you bail when asked tough questions.
Same to you, have a nice day.

That's good coming from someone who can just look at a picture and tell what kind of person they are.
NRA leadership is bat shit crazy, doesn't change that they are effective.
Maybe you can tell us why they should be labeled as a terror org. and be banned?
Or are you a little bit more pragmatic and believe that they should be changed from within to become what they used to be?

as in, the members themselves, who favor things like universal background checks, better mental health reporting, things like that, voting out the extremists and voting in sensible officers.

You, my friend, can't teach me anything about gun politics since you seem to have a preconceived notion of firearms owners.

Have a nice day.

I was going to go to our local outdoor range today and do some target shooting but the damn wind is blowing pretty hard so I'll just have to wait for a better day.

My friend, have a good day.

Any tips would be welcome.

Posts (and posters) that appear to even tolerate the existence of the NRA tend to disappear. You made it clear in follow-up posts in this thread that you aren't a big NRA fan. Again, I apologize.
