Sampling of pain inflicted by sequester

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2013/03/outside-washington-sequestration-begins-to-inflict-pain.php?ref=fpb

snip:

From the Cronkite News: “An Arizona school superintendent said Monday that her district has already cut 40 positions because of automatic federal spending reductions and will recommend cutting 65 more and closing three schools next year to save money.”

In South Bend, Ind.,, “A $30 million dollar construction project … is delayed because of the sequester budget cuts.”

The Charlotte Observer notes, “Closing the control tower at Concord Regional Airport could cost the city hundreds of charter flights from NASCAR teams and other businesses, local officials said Wednesday after learning that the tower’s federal funding is being eliminated. … Concord officials said they were notified Tuesday by the Federal Aviation Administration that funding would be cut off soon.”

The Dayton Daily News learned: “Furloughed Air Force civilian workers would cost Ohio’s economy $111.1 million in lost wages through September.”

In Las Vegas, “More than 220 local FAA workers received notices that they will have to take some unpaid days off.”

Pain to folks begins to become apparent.

Didn't need to happen.

will be feeling the sequester in both student Pell Grants and the amount of money they get for research.

snip
Cuts to other important education programs – such as Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG), Federal Work-Study, TRIO (federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds), the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) program for low-income students, graduate and international education, and teacher preparation – also will occur under sequestration. In addition, interest rates and origination fees charged for new federal student loans taken after July 1 will rise. This will increase the cost of education for UC students and limit the availability of other educational opportunities. Also, loan processing delays could make it harder for students to register for classes.

snip
Overall, the ten-campus UC system is seeing a 22 percent decline in federal research dollars compared to the same period (July through September) of the previous year.

snip
Close to two-thirds of the $400 million in federal research funding that UC Berkeley received last year came from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Most of that funding is spent directly on researchers’ salaries, so any loss in federal research dollars will mean lost jobs. As sequestration translates into fewer federal grants, the campus will be forced to hire fewer researchers.

This after quite a few years of State cuts to higher education. Ouch!

Depressed economy = lower wages = higher profits.

The only reason that GOP co. exists is to increase the wealth of their owners.
