Ed Markey Wins Massachusetts Democratic Senate Primary

BOSTON -- Businessman and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez and veteran U.S. Rep. Edward Markey will face each other in a special election in Massachusetts for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by John Kerry.

Unofficial returns show Markey won the Democratic nomination in a primary on Tuesday and Gomez won the Republican nod.

Markey defeated fellow U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch. Gomez won a three-way primary against former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and state Rep. Daniel Winslow.

Markey has served in the U.S. House since 1976 and is the dean of the state's congressional delegation. He had the early backing of Kerry, who resigned from the Senate to become U.S. secretary of state.

16. Kerry is supposed to refrain from all things political

I wonder if Teresa might speak of how Markey and Kerry were a team on climate change since the Rio conference that all three attended. Warren does have a busy schedule - but less busy than Kerry had in 2012 when he helped Warren. He was chair of a major committee and was on more committees than most Senators and did a lot of special foreign missions for OBama.

Markey could have the entire congressional delegation, Governor Patrick, and most of the local government in MA pulling for him. As people have mentioned, this is NOT 2010 when people were very angry about the economy and fell for a campaign where Brown rarely mentioned he was Republican. I saw some of the NECN coverage and I heard overjoyed Republicans speaking of "I was a Seal" being this year's "I drive a truck" and saying that good looks and image could trump issues. (Basically conceding that on issues he is pretty much on the wrong side of almost all of them.

I thought that Markey did a nice job in his speech speaking of the additions that he wrote to insure more inspections (at ports ?) to keep us safer. This I assume is a counter to the "I was a Seal". The fact is Markey has already done what a Congressman or Senator CAN do on national security -- where what Gomez did as a Seal 17 years ago is something he deserves respect and thanks for, but is not really something that translates to the job of Senator. ( ie John Kerry's expertise on terror was the result of his work in the Senate on things like BCCI - not his youthful heroism on a swiftboat.) I suspect that Markey's emphasis on this is to minimize any gain that Gomez can get versus him on national security.

I suspect that the dynamic on this will end up at its heart like 2012 did. Markey will vote for Reid; Gomez will vote for McConnell. That basic argument meant more than if Brown was likable or not - and it was the same as when Kerry defeated the very popular Weld. (Warren and Markey both had far more substance than their opponents, but that is another point.)

I also wonder if - like Romney - the fact that the successful career was in private equity could hurt. Was he Romney lite?

Gomez's speech was well written, but it's whole point is that Markey has spent his life in public service. He sees that as a negative - but it also can be a positive compared to being a money grubbing private equity guy. (How well did that work for Romney? )

Voting with McConnell would be voting against the interests of MA infrastructure. The choice is clear to us, I'm surprised anyone voted for Brown the way he behaved. Warren had a hard campaign and I am so glad MA gave her a chance to reclaim that seat. I hope that all the pols that can will be out there for Markey.

We just got out of the "Lynch could win" zone (who cares that he was behind even in his internal polls), and are already entering the Gomez could win period. I guess media have to be able to write about something.

Gomez garnered 88,325, or 51 percent of the votes, compared with 62,848 votes, or 36 percent, for former US attorney Michael J. Sullivan, and 22,830, or 13 percent, for state Representative Daniel B. Winslow, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.

Markey received 293,273, or 57 percent of the votes, compared with 217,174 votes, or 43 percent, for his opponent, US Representative Stephen F. Lynch, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.
