Poll: Plurality Wants One Party To Control White House, Congress

A national poll from Quinnipiac University released Wednesday suggested that Americans have had their fill of divided government.

In what might be a hopeful (albeit early) sign for a Democratic Party eager to win back control of the House of Representatives next year, the poll showed that 48 percent of voters nationwide would like one party to control both houses of Congress and the White House. Forty-three percent said they would prefer Congress and the president to be from two different parties.

A wide majority of Democrats — 64 percent — said they would prefer one-party control, while half of Republicans would rather see split-control.

The poll also found that Democrats claim a slight edge over Republicans heading into next year's Congressional races. Eighteen months out from the 2014 midterms, 41 percent of voters said they would vote for a Democrat for Congress compared with 37 percent who said they would vote for a Republican.

makes a moot point.

We cannot repeat the mistake of 2010. Democrats MUST show up! You can bet your ass that the Teabaggers will.

Hope people are serious about not wanting anymore divided government. It might have worked ok in the past when large numbers of Republicans were NOT insane but it is totally counterproductive and even self-destructive now unless, like the Republican Tea Party, your whole goal is to not allow anything meaningful to get done.

historically inacurate. Not only was LBJ blessed with a 67-seat Democratic majority in the Senate, back in those days, there were liberal and moderate Republicans willing to join in with progressive Democrats to pass good legislation. Obama doesn't have that luxury. There are no longer those types of Republicans, so divided government is bound to fail.

I wish more people, especially here on DU, knew and understood that. But for some reason, they're expecting Obama to act like LBJ when it is impossible for him to work with any of these fools.

He's always trying to find a way to get stuff done with a Republican or two signing on. He needs to quit that shit, stand on his principles proudly and publicly shame the GOP for being the obstructionist asshats they are.

Do that and the country would love him because the one thing America likes is a strong sounding president speaking his mind. That's what both Clinton and Reagan did and they're still hugely popular regardless of what we say here. Yes that can also backfire if you're positions are unpopular, like W. Bush. But the difference is, only in the 2000 election was W. ever a populist. Reagan and Clinton campaigned on populist items and they continued that while in the White House.

LBJ, also, was quite out spoken, loud and brazen and used the bully pulpit to great effect. He was also excellent in the one-on-one meeting and personal battle of wills. Obama, if he has those traits, doesn't seem to use them.

It's simply not true that he doesn't utilize the Bully Pulpit. Corporate Media never covers his chats, speeches, pressers. Watch CSPAN. They're the only ones that make some attempt at coverage.

... without MASSIVE overhauls of the types of Dem candidates we're sending to DC (actual public servants would be nice for a change), having a super majority won't do anything to help the most vulnerable. We need a strong push to the left.

districts, we may have to settle for the best moderate Democrat available. It's better than a Republican, but I've resigned myself to the reality that a lot of these Democrats hail from red states. There simply aren't enough liberal Democrats. It's so sad.
