Marsha Blackburn: Women 'Don't Want' Equal Pay Laws
Republican congresswoman Marsha Blackburn said on Sunday that women "don't want" equal pay laws.
During a roundtable discussion on NBC's Meet The Press, former White House advisor David Axelrod asked if she would support a law promoting workplace gender equality. Blackburn responded:
"I think that more important than that is making certain that women are recognized by those companies. You know, Ive always said that I didnt want to be given a job because I was a female, I wanted it because I was the most well-qualified person for the job. And making certain that companies are going to move forward in that vein, that is what women want. They dont want the decisions made in Washington. They want to be able to have the power and the control and the ability to make those decisions for themselves."
Blackburn voted against the 2009 Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a landmark bill for women's rights in the workplace. The law makes it easier for women to file wage discrimination suits against employers. She also voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act of 2009.

It's always about the money. This crap about women or any one else needing a descent paycheck is pure corporate propaganda designed to excuse the fact that corporations put profit over fair pay.

(9,350 posts)Who are the women who have told Rep. Blackburn that they do not seek equal pay? Also the statement that she made, which is listed in the above article has nothing to do with equal pay. So should a woman get a job because she is the most qualified and them be paid less because she is a woman?
Equal pay for women has nothing to do with hiring a woman just because she is a woman. It is about making sure that if a woman is hired and does the same job as a man that she gets paid the same amount as a man.

(16,992 posts)It would be so easy for her to have simply said, "Equal pay for equal work is a no-brainer." Instead she trots out the coded language and ends with a fake endorsement of empowerment.
I'd like to see her pull this stunt in front of a crowd of women of various ages and be forced to explain she's really saying corporations will treat women as they sit fit and the women can like it or lump it.
