Chris Christie: Striking Down DOMA Was A ‘Bad Decision’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) criticized the Supreme Court on Wednesday for striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), calling the ruling on the 1996 law that barred same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits a "bad decision."

“It’s just another example of judicial supremacy rather than having the government run by the people we actually vote for,” Christie said on his monthly radio show, as quoted by The Star-Ledger. “I thought it was a bad decision.”

The Republican said the majority opinion in the case — written by Justice Anthony Kennedy — was an affront to the lawmakers, and former President Bill Clinton, who helped make DOMA the law of the land nearly two decades ago.

“I thought that Justice (Anthony) Kennedy’s opinion in many respects was incredibly insulting to those people, 340-some members of Congress who voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, and Bill Clinton,” Christie said. “They basically said the only reason to pass that bill was to demean people.”

1. I guess Christie conveniently wants to ignore the fact that DOMA was UNCONSTITUTIONAL

It selected a group of people and relegated them to second class citizen status. It prevented them from having the same rights he has, as well as many other Americans. It was discriminatory and that is not permitted, nor is it acceptable, in American society.

His true colors are showing through. Christie is a right wing Republicon. Any progressive who supports him is harming the country.

DOMA was a FEDERAL LAW in the first place! So it was never in the hands of the states. Where the hell was he when it was put in place? Probably voting for the people who voted for it - that's where.

I told you sooooooooooooooooooooooooo! And for the record - his challenger has been ALL over this decision. She's a very strong Progressive with a huge sense of social justice.


Tee hee - this isn't going to go well for him. She challenged him to make a statement on this yesterday and when he finally did? He showed his True Colors.

5. It was not an affront to Clinton.

He urged SCOTUS to strike down this law. At the time that it passed in 1996, there had been a push by conservatives to amend the Constitution to state that marriage was between a man and a woman. DOMA was a compromise that passed with a veto proof majority.

6. There are a surprising number of folks that don't get it with Christie. He needs to be out of public

office. He doesn't need to be Governor of NJ, Senator from NJ or POTUS. He needs to be out on his arse.

If he can't defend tearing down stupid laws that only hurt people, he shouldn't be a public official elected to office.

The Constitution was not written to suppress people's rights, it was written to guarantee people's rights.

8. His comments come as no surprise.

The state legislature passed last year a same-sex marriage bill and he vetoed it. The irony is that the Baggers think that he's too moderate. That just shows how crazy they are.
