U.S. Senator Wants Resolution Authorizing War With Iran If ‘Nothing Changes’ In Two Months

By Ben Armbruster on Jul 23, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said on Tuesday that he plans to introduce a resolution authorizing war with Iran if “nothing changes” regarding the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program by the end of the year.

“If nothing changes in Iran, come September, October, I will present a resolution that will authorize the use of military force to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb,” Graham told a “cheering” audience at a conference put on by the right-wing group Christians United for Israel, according to CQ Roll Call.

“The only way to convince Iran to halt their nuclear program is to make it clear that we will take it out,” Graham said, echoing comments he made last week, calling the war authorization “the last card to play in a very dangerous situation.”

But experts and former top officials have been warning that ratcheting up pressure and rhetoric against Iran — particularly after Iranians just elected the most moderate presidential candidate available to them — would be counterproductive. “While it will take time to secure an agreement to resolve all concerns, diplomacy will only succeed if we are prepared to leverage existing sanctions and other incentives in exchange for reciprocal Iranian concessions,” said a letter signed by 29 former government officials, military officers, diplomats, and national security experts.

Are they now able to launch a WMD attack on us in 45 minutes??? A more moderate govt just got elected. What a perfect opportunity to practice more diplomacy. Of course stuff like just gets in the way of having more wars.

We need someone to write a law: any war the US might consider starting is either Necessary or Optional. A Necessary war is one with two components: an enemy with the ability to send onto US soil - not allies' soil but the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, or any territory or possession of the US that had that status at least 400 days before holding a war was considered - a number of troops equal to the current strength of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, and the imminent threat that the enemy will invade the US. An optional war is one where at least one of those is not true.

Upon passage of this law, every member of Congress shall report the names, dates of birth and locations of the following family members:
Parents, if still alive
Spouse, children and children's spouses
Grandchildren, and their spouses and children
First and second cousins, and their spouses and children

Any member of Congress who votes to enter an optional war shall, upon the commencement of that war, be removed from Congress and inducted into the Army - and only the Army - along with all the family members listed above who are at least 17 years of age (17 year olds can join the military now) and who are not currently confined to a hospital for a disease or condition they had the day before the vote was taken.

All males physically fit to serve in the infantry will attend infantry or engineer school.
All females physically fit to serve in the military police will attend military police school.
All persons not fit for combat service will be trained in service support jobs like mechanic or supply and will be assigned to a unit designated 435th Service and Supply Battalion. (There are 435 people in the House, hence the name. There's already a 535th S&S.)

When all the Congressmen march off to war, a special election, paid for out of the new soldiers' campaign war chests, will be held. After the war is over, the Congressmen who went to fight may campaign for their seats in a regular election but will re-enter Congress with no seniority.
