Texas Bill Would Require Women To Take Adoption Class Before Abortion
A new bill being advanced in the Texas state Senate would require women to take a three-hour class on adoption before legally being allowed to have an abortion.
Senate Bill 42, filed by Texas State Sen. Eddie Lucio, an anti-abortion Democrat, would direct the state's Health and Human Services Commission to develop a three-hour course "regarding a pregnant woman's option to place her child for adoption." Women would be required to complete the course at least 24 hours before having an abortion. Lucio said the bill is intended to change women's minds about ending their pregnancies.
It is my hope that, when presented with more information on adoption resources and services available, more pregnancies can be carried to term, Lucio said in a statement.
Lucio was the only Senate Democrat who voted in favor of the sweeping abortion restrictions Gov. Rick Perry (R) signed into law this month, which prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and require abortion clinics to become ambulatory surgical centers. Opponents of the law say it is likely to shut down many or most of the abortion clinics in the state.

(5,946 posts)Texas could become the most educated state!
Class for when your child gets a gun and kills someone or themselves. 2 week course on gun safety, preferably in prison.
Class for When someone gets a DUI - must take classes on safe driving and not drinking, don't get license back until you finish the course
Class on ethics and being a good neighbor for the man who owned the fertilizer factory that blew up.
Class on over coming mysogeny for rapists.
Class on budgeting for McDonald executives
Class on how to live on food stamps for all legislature - and them must prove they can do it beforfe they can vote again on legislature - no food staples to begin.
And so and so on. Classes for ALL!!!

Edit--this comment is not meant to imply that the abortion decision is in any way up to anyone but the woman

(758 posts)In every single state where they've taken control, this has been their obsession, women's bodies and what they can/can't do with them. I hope women, and men who love women, are paying close attention. Can you imagine Texas passing a law mandating that every man who purchases a firearm take gun safety courses, which of course would make far more sense? If this isn't a war on women, don't know what is.

(33,279 posts)A deliberate strategy by the RTL forces - create an endless series of hoops to jump through for access to a legal procedure, untill the hassle outweighs the benefit, forcing women to go out of state and clinics out of business.
And it is working everywhere they control the state legislature.

(35,015 posts)And her rationale for advancing this horrifically oppressive bill is ridiculous.
Women will be making the short trip across the border for abortion services and a lot of them will die.

(50,546 posts)There are a ton of reasons you wouldn't want to go that way...oh, like your mixed-race infant is going to be a hard one to place and if you can't place it, YOU get to raise it, or you might not want to be pregnant with your rapist's baby...

(2,237 posts)Seriously, this is starting to get really insane, this would be like the third anti-abortion bill they'd pass in a 2 month period (or maybe even a 1 month period).
How many abortion victories do incumbent republicans need to make absolutely positively sure they can win a republican primary?
Keep this up and they'll run out of anti-abortion bills to pass, except ones that have already been struck down in court.

(2,682 posts)just thinking about a class designed to tell women about the joys and fulfillment of carrying their rapist's or incestuous child to term. And, oh, by the way, if the baby can't be placed for adoption (like the sperm donor doesn't consent, for example),...............
YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.
Why don't these people keep their damned noses out of other people's business.
