2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPrediction: Reaction to the October opening of Healthcare Markets will rock the political landscape.
It is predicted that during the first year of the ACA that 7 million people will use the state health markets to find health care.
Pollsters find that only about 25% of the population have a general knowledge of what ObamaCare includes.
I believe that they are looking at the wrong groups and the wrong numbers. I bet that for those that have been denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition, or because they are older and self employed or work for a company that doesn't provide health care that the awareness is very high.
My prediction.
First 72 hours - more than a million will sign up for health care through the markets
By the end of October more than 4 million will have signed up and that the 7 million figure will be reached by mid November.
When January 1st arrives more than 10 million will have used the markets.
If these larger numbers hold then it will have an earthquake effect on American politics. There will be no more votes to repeal ObamaCare.
Republicans who live in purple-ish districts will see that thousands of people in their district (or state) are signing up and will not be associated with any effort to take away their health care.
It will be a major set back for the TeaParty Crazy faction of the Republican Party and you will see an organized movement to make Jeb the front leader on the nomination because he will be (correctly IMO) as the only Republican who can strengthen the 'moderate' wing of the Republican Party and also appeal to Hispanics.

(26,549 posts)If it gets rolling, people will like it. Then the Republicans will never be able to get rid of it.
What's worse is the blue states will add "government options". Which will be cheaper yet just as "effective". Driving the private insurance companies out. And then we get de-facto single-payer.

The middle and below middle income folks are going to have an awakening into the truth of the matter. Many of these went with the "Christian/True American" squakers on Fox News right wing to their demise. The monthly reality will dawn quickly...how many will react about being lied to and oust their representatives is still to be seen.

(31,849 posts)But quick question: where are you getting your numbers? Are there 7-10 million people to have been denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition, or because they are older and self employed or work for a company that doesn't provide health care?
Not doubting it, just looking for a source.

Many old folks of both parties like SS and Medicare because it benefits them when the private sector failed them. Think of the folks who retired around the time of the 2008 banking crisis just to see their home equity and 401Ks wiped out. Uninsured will eventually feel the same way once they get those regular checkups and treatment for pre-existing conditions.
