If that is true, then why aren't more and more Republicans coming out and announcing their support of passing a clean CR and raising the debt ceiling with no strings attached? Why are there only 219 votes (maybe!) in the House to pass a clean CR?

2. The sane members of the GOP are afraid of tea party primary

There are divisions in the GOP but there are some sane members of the GOP who did not want the shutdown and do not want a debt default. These members are worried about tea party challenges. Look what happen to McConnell in the Senate. McConnell was not sufficiently behind Carnival Cruz and so a tea party group withdrew its endorsement.

3. Because the GOP has a culture of loyalty to the brand over all else.

You don't get in with that crowd until you prove your loyalty to them above all else. That means rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic if the captain says so. That also means, no matter how wrong they think their party is, they'll defend that stance against the opposition.

Also in the fail bucket for the GOP is this notion that the must always be against something. From conversations and emails I get from them, they seem to define their identity against things. Since Obama isn't a Republican, they have to be against him. Even if he's making sense and it forces the GOP to make non-sense. Being against the President is much more important.

4. They did! In fact, Rachel's show on Monday exposed at least 20 ReThugs who

want to vote for a clean CR. However, it was reported that they seem to be backtracking. They are truly afraid of having Teabaggers run against them in the primaries.

Basically the party is run top-down and the run of the mill R congressman don't want to buck the party leadership for fear of losing party support and ultimately their seats.

However, with the government shutdown they then have lots of people in their home districts who are directly furloughed calling their office. As time goes on more and more private sector employees get laid off due government contracts not being let/renewed/allowed to go forward and so that number increases and people get angrier and angrier as well.

So these congressman then start weighing if they are more likely to lose their seat by bucking the leadership or bucking the furloughed and their families.

They are getting to the point (well, many are anyway) that they have to be thinking about bucking the leadership, although they are no doubt warning the leadership "hey I can only hold out two more weeks at most) or something like that.
