If Lincoln would have done what Representative Thaddeus Stevens and General Sherman recommended for ending the Civil War the vast majority of problems in this country since 1865 would have never happened.

We would have been a much better country too if we listened to Stevens and Sherman.

Maybe the republican party is in fact God's punishment. Being a fundie means voting for the guy with the bigger belt to beat you with.

5. Imagine how depressing our country would be

if we did not have a democracy and Republicans were never given the opportunity to participate in government; if only those who agreed with a specific point of view were allowed to express that point of view and put it into action. People who did not think like Democrats would be afraid to speak publicly. They would have to hold secret meetings, and hope that some day they would be free to speak openly.

Think about how depressing if all of those millions and millions of people, in one election at least a majority of people in this nation, had never been able to have their choice for president because the Democrats are the only ones allowed to run the country by divine right.

Democracy just really, really sucks, because sometimes your side doesn't win.

6. Maybe if Democracy was working, we wouldn't have had Bush.

I agree with mnhtnbb. Bush was never elected.

Our country is no longer a real Democracy if corporations are people and our elections are not verifiable.

9. How about a country where the Republicans nominate people like Gerald Ford?

Hell, how about one where they nominate people like Bob Dole? In Europe, they have conservative parties that frequently come to power. They don't even dream of touching their universal health care systems.

I'm all in favor of a democracy where there are multiple points of view. I'd just rather not have one where we have a major party that starts fucking ridiculous wars of choice, nominates theocrats to the federal bench, and wants poor people to suffer.

We would not be militarizing our law enforcement. The NSA would have been better controlled. No threat of defaulting.
And so on, down a long list of what we should not be dealing with, but instead are.
