2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTake the deal, Democrats.
We are two days away from a default. The difference between the Senate and House versions are miniscule at best. The only way to prevent this type of brinksmanship is to win the House in 2014. Let us not forget that this bill doesn't include a delay of the individual mandate, which started the government shutdown in the first place. We have seen that certain segments of the Republican Party do not have a soul. That we have to accept.
This is not a win vs. lose battle. There are real lives and jobs at stake.

(373 posts)The Republicans are about to lose, so we'll just hold tight, thanks.
They'll concede, and then we'll get those fucknuts out by 2014 or sooner.

(15,696 posts)Until this morning, I was hoping a deal could be done; however, it appers that republicans can't learn until they experience something firsthand. Remember the Dust Bowl? Did Oklahoma fix that by itself?
Not hardly.

(35,015 posts)Yes real lives and jobs are at stake, but so is the future of this country. If Dems and Obama give in to the demands of extortionists, it's all over for all of us.

Now, obviously DU is right on the issues. But the bottom line is that the House GOP has showed a willingness to default on our debts. We cannot let that happen. Democrats must be the better people and not inflict pain on other people like the GOP has shown the willingness too..

(20,176 posts)The best deal they were going to get was the Senate deal. It was a reasonable deal, a painful deal but one that both sides could (and had) compromised to...and when they rejected it, they broke any chance of a resolution. They own this mess now.
It's the last best offer they're going to get...they just need to decide if they're going to accept it now or after they go over the cliff. There isn't going to be a better deal for them, but there might be a worse one if they don't take this one.

Yes, there are certainly lives and jobs at stake, but if the Tea Idiots get their way, do you think that government will ever go back to the way it was? Won't there soon be even MORE lives and jobs at stake? If the Tea Idiots get concessions, they will only be emboldened to in the future hold anything they don't like hostage until they get their way.
Hold the line, Dems!

That said, NO. As polichick said, Dems taking bad deals is what got us here in the first place. Time to end the cycle.

(45,274 posts)(Plagiarizing myself from another thread--
I shudder to think of the harm that will come from a default. There are no good answers; if the Republicans have their way, people will suffer and die. If they continue their tantrum while Democrats stand firm and let the default happen, people will suffer and die. But I think fewer will be hurt in the latter case. It's sort of a harm-reduction paradigm. However, anyone--including me--who is confronted by the immediacy of lost income will be sorely tempted to sell their more distant future in exchange for immediate relief. It's just human to respond that way. I understand it, and my empathy and compassion are fully activated. But it's sort of like the case of a compassionate surgeon who wants to do you a grave injury with his scalpel now in order to give you some prospect of a better quality of life in the future.

(29,205 posts)It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --
"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"
i.e. if you pay the ransom, they only return in 6 weeks to ask for more.

(250 posts)No, no, and no.
Capitulate here and we'll be doing this again, and again, and again ad infinitum.
Honestly, I wouldn't even want the Democrats to threaten default for a policy gain, assuming they held the house.

(59,503 posts)The staffers - and even the Congressmen took their jobs with a known salary package. This included the government paying for the lion's share of their insurance. If this passes, all those people take what is really a HUGE pay cut. I don't know the numbers, but for those with family insurance the cut could be over $20,000.
These professionals - like their peers in private industry - considered what they were offered when they took the job.
This is playing into a RW LIE that Congress exempted itself - when they didn't. They are now pretending that the federal government - their employer - paying a portion is somehow "special treatment". This is completely unfair.
Now, I know that many will say that the Congressmen and their staff make more money than lots of Americans - they do. However, the vast majority of them could make more money -- and get health insurance - in private jobs. This action could cause the loss of many of the best staffers.

(8,217 posts)WTF? That is unacceptable and sets a bad precedent that Congress could hijack our ability to pay for any sort of crazy side project they want. Seriously, you see Paul Ryan trying to tack on Abortion in to something like this now.
No, Just HELL NO. They shouldn't get concessions in regards to anything that deals with us paying our bills.
They made a huge drama out of something that should not be in dispute.

(6,452 posts)That measure proves that they want to do this again, and they want MORE leverage next time. And it would grant it to them.
Allowing them to do this is worse than default.

(16,963 posts)and we will talk about anything after that. We have to stick to that. President Obama is doing his job: preserve, protect, defend the Constitution of the U.S.A. The Republicans in the House who are refusing to pass the bills are not upholding their oath which is: "I will support the Constitution of the U.S.A.". They have to a person, broken their oath the these United States and President Obama knows it, and we should all know it. I don't want to make PBO's battle a lonely one. There is too much at stake.
So, NO!
