Cruz lashes out at Senate GOP over shutdown failure

In remarks to an Iowa Republican group on Friday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that his government shutdown and debt default plan would have worked at repealing the Affordable Care Act — also known as Obamacare — if Senate Republicans had only backed him up. According to Talking Points Memo, Cruz was the keynote speaker at Iowa Republicans’ annual Ronald Reagan fundraising dinner.

“We didn’t accomplish our ultimate policy goal in this battle, and we didn’t because unfortunately a significant number of Senate Republicans chose not to unite and stand side by side with House Republicans,” Cruz insisted. “Had we stood together I’m convinced the outcome of this fight would be very, very different.”

Watch video of Cruz talking to reporters about his plans for the country, embedded below via the Des Moines Register:

Cruz is a very dangerous man. His deceit will know no boundaries.

Treat your political opposition as an enemy, not a colleague.

Be prepared for short-term sacrifice for long-term gain.

He is absolutely right that the Senate Republican leadership capitulated. I'm glad that they did. However, it certainly did not need to go down that way.

Should Democrats find themselves arrayed against a Republican president, they absolutely should engage in merciless political fights to obstruct a right-wing agenda. In essence, Cruz is insane not due to his tactics, but due to his ideology.

The ACA was voted into law by both houses, signed by the President and stood the test of the Supremes. This was democracy working. To try to stop up is undermining how our country operates. Obstruction is a losing proposition. What you do is work harder to get people to vote for your party, then when you have a majority, you can change the law. You do not change things by trying to shut the country down.

...I'd certainly hope that the Democrats would try EVERYTHING within their parliamentary power to obstruct that - for instance. It has nothing to do with who has a majority or any of that. It means standing on principle and using all tools available. I'm not defending the GOP - their politics are wrong.
