2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe GOP Is Attacking Me Already. Please Help.
I know, I know. The 2014 election is still almost a year away. But the national Republican Party already is attacking me, and I need your help.
The Washington Post recently reported that the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is "targeting" me, and 18 other House Democrats. Why? Because we voted for healthcare reform in 2010. The headline of the article was "'Keep Your Health Plan Act' Spells Trouble For Dozens of Democrats."
The NRCC did, in fact, carry out this threat under the snide heading, "If You Don't Like Your Democratic Representative, You Don't Have To Keep Them (sic)." (The NRCC seems to have been infected by the same bad-grammar/bad-spelling bug that runs rampant among teabaggers.) The NRCC then pretentiously informed Florida voters that "In 2014, They Get to Press the Restart Button." (Oh, God, it's a reset button, not a restart button. Can't these GOP tools get anything right?)
The Republicans then excoriated me for voting for ObamaCare and then . . . wait for it . . . against repealing it! So, scandalously, the charge against me is that I was for ObamaCare before I was for it. As U2 used to say, "I stand accused of the things I've said." ("When Love Comes to Town" (1989) ed.)
And here is the clincher the Republicans say that these actions make me an "ObamaCare co-conspirator." Woooooooooo.
Listen, you don't have to put me in a hypnotic trance to get me to admit that I support universal, comprehensive and affordable healthcare for every American. Call me crazy if you want, but I believe that all Americans should be able to see doctors when they are sick, and get the care that they need to stay healthy and alive. I prefer that position to the Republican healthcare plan: "Don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly."
But here's the thing: We're nowhere near the 2014 election, and yet already, the Republican Party is on the warpath, whacking at me. Shades of 2010, when they called me their #1 target, and spent more than $1 million to defeat me.
So I have to ask you would you please help? Would you please give us the resources that we need to defeat their lies with our truth? Would you please contribute to our campaign? $25 or $35 or $50 can make a big difference, and every dollar counts.
As I explained a few weeks ago, the best way that you can do that is to become a "sustainer," making monthly contributions to our campaign. But even if it's just this once, please give what you can give. Please.
Don't let them threaten me. Don't even let them bust my chops, and try to silence us. Our work is too important for that. You know it, and I'm counting on you.
Courage,
Rep. Alan Grayson

Yesterday, he posted the words of Pope Francis - which is fine, except he had a link to learn more - sure enough it was a link to contribute!
I seriously doubt he is high on the RCCC hit list.

(34,136 posts)For the next year my donations and campaign efforts will go to Gwen Graham so I can be rid of Steve Southerland (FL-Tea Party). Graham may not be as liberal as Alan Grayson, but having her in Congress will give Grayson and other Democrats more support.
Gwen Graham is running in Florida's 2nd Congressional District, with endorsements so far from the National Education Association, the DCCC and Emily's List. She has also received the highlighting of the DCCC Chairman Steve Israel: "One of our favorite candidates", was named in The Rothenberg Report as one of the top 5 races in the South, was mentioned in Politico as one of their "50 Politicos to Watch" and just last month, her race was named in US News and World Report as one of the "Three Hottest Congressional Races to Watch in 2014."
The suggested contribution for this event is $25 per person. To RSVP, please email julia.gill.07@gmail.com. If you cannot attend, but would like to make a contribution, please click here. https://act.myngp.com/el/6136340331232231424/1190364273579130880

Congratulations Congressman Grayson, the radical reactionary wing of the neo-fascist Party has you in its sights. Why do Republicans hate normal Americans?

(14,174 posts)Unfortunately its a sad truth that ever increasing spending is the only way to get elected. Until there is sane, limited and public financing so representatives can concentrate on serving their ridings instead of spending all their time campaigning for $, this is the only way available. And the greater the GOP spends silencing someone like Grayson, the more it should indicate how much they fear him and what he can do by exposing them for the traitorous frauds they are.
Also unfortunate, but predictable, it seems that one has to scroll past the first couple of posts meant to derail and smear the message. Obviously these two, whether paid or not, are scanning each new thread and pouncing on quickly any one that comes up that in any way promotes a progressive platform (ie. traditional Democratic party values) especially one like this that involves an actual "traditional values" Democratic representative.

(36,081 posts)When anyone wants to see the good political parties have done for America, just get out the accomplishment comparison and contrast chart and the issues will get clearer to people.
Like The Who say... People forget. Remind them that their day-to-day struggle is the direct result of their party wanting them to forget....and those worn down by their struggles will forget. It's understandable. But you're here to help them never forget whose side you and your party are on, and that just taking their time to vote in 2014 for all Democrats will ensure that the wealth of this country gets fairly spent on its own 99% for a change.

I wish that when you post here at DU that your hyper-links would go to actual info regarding 'issues' instead of a DOZEN links that ask for money!

(36,827 posts)I'm not in Alan's district, but I'm kicking in $20.14 per month till election day. I think it's extremely important that Democrats everywhere support Alan. He's one of the best allies we have in congress and as such this also makes him one of the biggest targets of the GOP. The fact that they are so afraid of him should be telling us all something.
