Forget the poll numbers -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who lost the 2008 presidential race to Barack Obama, knows that you can't write off an incumbent based on his approval ratings.
"We all wear thin with the American people after a while," McCain told the Associated Press of the President.
"To count a man of that talent out at this point in time in his administration would be a huge mistake," he added.
Obama's job approval ratings aren't exactly stellar as he enters his sixth year in office, but as McCain noted, he still has three years left to govern. Speaking at a year-end press conference, Obama foreshadowed a renewed push for comprehensive immigration reform, an extension of unemployment insurance and a minimum wage increase in a vow to make 2014 a "year of action."

(31,849 posts)we don't owe it to the President, we owe it to ourselves to support what this President is attempting to accomplish. Despite all the noise, we HAVE accomplish some amazing things through this President, and can accomplish a lot more with a Democratic House.

(31,849 posts)we're on the same page.
But be warned:
That statement, in all its truth, will not be met well here. Few will acknowledge how our lack of support, er ... "holding his feet to the fire", has put him in a position where he was forced to make compromises.
Imagine if Democrats had shown the same solidarity, in 2010/2011, that they did in the 2013 debt-ceiling fight?
