While Greg Abbott is criticizing Democratic challenger Wendy Davis for raising money in Hollywood, the Texas attorney general has scheduled his own California fundraiser next month. In an invitation seeking West Coast money for his gubernatorial campaign, Abbott touts his money-raiser August 20 at the Grand Del Mar hotel in San Diego. Top-tier host tickets go for $25,000 per couple.
Hosts listed on the invitation include Doug Manchester, the hotel owner and real-estate developer who purchased the San Diego Union-Tribune, which he has used to promote conservative causes and development projects. The New York Times has noted the controversial newspaper publisher seems to be using the paper as a brochure for his special interests. Other hosts include Dallas beer distributor Barry Andrews, former Texas Ranger owner Tom Hicks and one-time computer industry executive and yachting enthusiast Darwin Deason of Dallas.
