Ted Cruz walks out of Christian event after being booed

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, walked offstage at an event Wednesday evening after his remarks in support of Israel drew boos from some members of the audience.

Cruz was speaking at a dinner for In Defense of Christians (IDC), a group that aims to raise awareness of persecuted minority communities in the Middle East, particularly Christians.

According to The Daily Caller, it was Cruz's assertion that "Christians have no greater ally than Israel" which drew the first negative reaction from some in the crowd, who booed and yelled, "stop it!"

As Cruz doubled down on his point - "those who hate Israel hate America," he said - the interruptions grew.

3. What US "Christians" don't get is that "Palestinians" includes the original Christians

The way US Protestants, in general, understand Christian history is, in a nutshell, Paul sailed off for Rome, and everyone in the Middle East became Muslims.

Part of that perception owes to the elevation of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, and the ensuing split with the Eastern churches.

But it really boggles the mind that when people of Cruz' understanding of "Christian" come into contact with the direct lineal descendants of the original Christians, they can't quite wrap their heads around the notion that they are not Armageddon cheerleaders like the more conservative ranges of US Protestantism.

His base will agree with him, and I'm afraid that non-political independents will just see it as a group being rude to Cruz as they're not as likely as more politically minded people (like us) to know that their worldview only cares about Israel in that they need it to be around when Jesus comes back so He can wipe it off the map and usher in the endtimes.

7. He probably only took the invitation because the group had "Christian" in their name

Had he known they were actual historically authentic Christians, he wouldn't have shown up.

As I understand it, these were Arab Christians. I had a friend who was an Arab Christian. Her name was Helen Thomas. Coming to tell people how wonderful Israel was, and how great a friend Israel was may play to some Christian audiences, but not to these people. Helen would have stomped him flat like a cockroach (any similarities are not coincidental). Her people apparently came close to doing just that.

Cruz came to open a slaughterhouse in a vegetarian commune. What kind of reception did he THINK he was going to get?
