2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBill Maher mocks gullible America for missing the real enemy
Bill Maher in his rather harsh piece chastises Americans for their gullibility. He expresses the frustration of many who realize that Americans once again are being conned into war. One only hopes that the repetition will work. Many with a platform are starting to speak up. The mistakes of the past can be abated if we spread the light. Light is the best disinfectant.
Bill Maher starts his skit graphicly enough. When it comes to being baited into war," Maher said, America has to try a little harder to not be so f*cking easy.

(14,449 posts)Seriously. I don't know what to think. Our President says he would have voted "no" in 2003. But would he have really? He sure is voting for it now. I am just confused by our progressive President at the moment.

(6,604 posts)this is 2014 and a lot has happened in the last 11 years.
Obama is not in the same position as Bush was in 2003 geopolitically. Bush and his minions--sorry--controllers--used a domestic tragedy to gin up public support for a war based on demonstrable lies. Obama is cleaning up the pile of shit that resulted.
I have to admit I'm still conflicted as well, though.

(2,062 posts)What are you confused about? these air missions... I guess I am confused at all the people confused. Think about what ISIS is doing, and then think about who is going against them....Iraq? no, they are runners, Iran...they said what we are doing is wrong, Israel?, not involved, they'd rather beat up Palestine, and now Syria, Britian?....not much, other mideast countries....well yes some have agreed to some airstrikes, but did they offer to go it alone...no, France, again air strikes, but no offer for anything else...Unchecked ISIS can run over countries. Can ISIS recruit more members...yes, will they, yes....so do we throw our hands up and say..nope we are not getting involved in this, when no one else has the balls to stand up the ISIS.....Tell me DU war room....What is your solution?

(6,604 posts)I'm conflicted that in one sense, yes, we have a legitimate role in cleaning up the Bush admin's mess. They opened the box to this shitstorm, after all.
OTOH, maybe if the US refused to step in until more nations in the region grew a pair on their own (as you might say), they might have to do just that.
The MIC wants its defense and oil money now and has no problem going it (essentially) alone.

(14,566 posts)There was no chaos over there. Yes, Saddam and sons were vile tyrants, but where they were in 2001 was no different than any other Islamic middle east country.
There was absolutely NO reason at all to go into Iraq.
I don't favor meddling in the middle east at all, so this isn't something I can support.
I like BHO a good bit, but he appears to be bending to political pressure on this this in that he is continuing the wack a mole policy.
Every time we meddle into things over there, something new sprints out of it.

(28,264 posts)Bush and his controllers twisted a large segment of this country's population into not being happy unless we're waging a war, someplace; not sacrificing large amounts of blood and treasure for some questionable purpose is deemed to be a weakness, with serious political consequences. I believe we are giving ISIS et al precisely what they want from us, right now---they're calling the tune, and this country is vigorously dancing to it. I wonder if we'll ever learn.....

(9,020 posts)Some people seem to think that ISIS is simply a CIA creation and nothing more. They felt the same way about al-Queda. They also believe that 9/11 was a Bush/Cheney inside job.
At some point, I think you have to trust those in power. Either that, or you live your entire life never believing one single thing you hear coming from Washington or the media. I can't live like that.
