The red states got redder, some purple states went reddish

Big deal. It was a bad election, maybe even a worst case scenario. Places like Kansas, Georgia, and Kentucky elected Republicans! Oh my God! Who would have thought? So, they won purple Iowa and Colorado and we won purple New Hampshire. They won NC, but it's clearly a purple state now when not too long ago it was red. They barely held onto governorships in FL, WI, ME, and even KS, but at least we won PA back from the Tea Party.

Yes, it was a terrible election, but when most of the contested Dem seats are in red states, obviously it's bad for the Dems, especially in an off-year election.

Our bigger problem is with state legislatures. The Dems need to invest over the next 6 years to regain control of these legislatures so that we can prevent the racial gerrymandering of the white party.

Besides, look at the inroads that progressives made, winning more than 40% of the vote in some of the reddest states in the nation. It's not like the Dems have a big gap to close.

And, let's not forget, we have Obama in the White House and there are several relatively sane Republicans in the Senate. This election was a huge disappointment, but it's not a disaster.

250 House seats.

54 Senate seats.

31 Governor seats.

most state legislatures are red.

This election was historically bad for Dems, compared to any election cycle in modern history. The worst midterm losses ever. House super majority.

You are very right about one thing though. I do agree that Dem focus should shift, almost completely, to state government races. The only way forward is to capture and hold state legislatures. To capture and hold as many state government elected offices at every level. We have to build from a strong base. Its the "long road" view but, at the end of the day, the only way out of the cold a decade or more from now will be to go back to the beginning and start over from the state level. Hopefully, we will all live long enough to see it.
