2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMitch McConnell's horrific agenda as Senate leader:
Here's a link to last August's Courier-Journal report on McConnell's comments at a Koch Brother fianced soiree. As per yesterday's results, the majority of voting Kentuckians never need unemployment benefits, never struggle working for a minimum wage, and have no interest in refinancing student loan debt. What a bubble they live in!
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told a conference of rich, politically active conservatives in June that he wouldn't allow votes on the minimum wage and extending unemployment if he becomes majority leader, according to a leaked audio recording.
In the recording, which appeared on the website of The Nation, he also said that passage of the McCain-Feingold Act to limit political contributions was "the worst day of my political life."
The event was organized by billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, who donate heavily to conservative and tea party causes. The Nation reported that political action committees and people with ties to Koch Industries have contributed at least $41,800 to McConnell during this campaign cycle.
The recording includes passages in which McConnell says he would block votes on issues like raising the minimum wage, extending unemployment benefits and refinancing student loan debt. "We're not going to be debating all of these gosh darn proposals," he said during the discussion. "These people believe in all the wrong things."

(45,251 posts)Kudos to Grimes for coming as close as she did, being a Democratic woman in a red state, running against a long time Republican Senator who has also been Senate leader for a long time.
But, they knew what he stood for when they voted for the fucker yesterday.

(15,480 posts)This info is from 2012 - but relevant to McConnell's tenure as Senator. Wonder how the voter turnout was in Kentucky's many pockets of poverty. Our system of government is so broken when people are so beaten down and ill-educated that they do not vote in their own best interests.
The poverty rate for Kentuckians ages 18 to 64 increased from 17.6 in 2011 to 18.3 in 2012. The rate in 2008 was 15.7. The Bureau's American Community Survey, an ongoing statistical survey that samples a percentage of the population every year, also estimated that one in four children in Kentucky live in poverty.
"The ACS report reminds us again of the serious challenge Kentucky faces when it comes to the economic security of its citizens. Many hard-working families are not able to make ends meet, and those economics negatively impact children in our state," said Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates.
Child poverty in Kentucky increased to 26.5 percent in 2012 from 23.5 percent in 2008.
