Related: About this forumMary Landrieu tells a truth many in the South find hard to swallow (VIDEO)
Why is it that many politicians like Mary Landrieu find the courage to state a truth when their backs are against the wall? Many times by then it is too late.
Mary Landrieu has known these realities all her life. She has lived it. She should have said these things long ago and grown her real voter base instead of pandering to an appeased base that gave her victories at the expense of those who have felt no reason to engage.
Unfortunately even as the Senator calls out the entrenched Southern prejudice, she gives and out for the intrinsic hate of the President by giving some an out. How can the Presidents energy policy be anathema to her state when hydrocarbon production is set to reach an all time high in the US this year.
That not withstanding, better late than never.

(3,533 posts)I thought it was the Supreme Court's premise that dissecting the Voter's Right Act was because all the nasty actions of those southern states have evaporated into kindness. If we have politicians admitting racism is alive and well, why isn't our justice dept overturning the supreme's decision and reinstating legislative law that is the will of the people. The supreme's don't have any power to enforce anything and all their decisions are subject to legislative law which was pre-existing. What's constitutional about equal rights when the rights of many are being reproven to be violated again?

(13 posts)...AA votes. It won't work. She's going down in the runoff.
Landrieu comes from an old line political family of privilege gained during the South's most virulent racist past. Heck, she doesn't even LIVE in Louisiana; rather, her residence is a $2 million mansion in DC.
She's in politics for all the wrong reasons. And she deserved to lose in the primaries to someone who actually intended to accomplish something.

(9,350 posts)Senator Landrieu does have a home in Louisiana. All members of Congress are required to have a home in both their home state and in Washington, D.C. In addition, a number of her family members, including her parents and her brother, still love in Louisiana. Her brother, Mitch Landrieu, is the mayor of New Orleans.
Louisiana has an open primary system in which all the candidates from all the parties run at the same time. Therefore, there was not a primary in which Landrieu could have lost to another Democrat.

(13 posts)...but she doesn't actually live there. She strolls through during election season but that's about it.

What you say about the open primary is true, though.

(2,063 posts)Cassidy is even worse than she is. I'm not a fan of Mary's, but I'd rather her over a person that is just another Republican idiot like Vitter.
And she wasn't wrong about the racism and sexism. I don't know if you're from Louisiana, but it's a regular occurrence here. Just yesterday there was a story in the T-P about a study that proves housing discrimination against blacks.
Cassidy wants to do things like raise the retirement age to 70. I'd rather nothing over something like that.
Pity that the national Democrats gave up on Mary so easily. She's pulled off tough runoffs her whole career.

(2,807 posts)Obama stopped exploratory well drilling for a brief time, already producing wells kept pumping. He did not shut down the whole gulf. She is lying about her own president.
I hope she gets beaten by 20 points. We do not need the likes of her.
