2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWHO SAYS BERNIE SANDERS CAN'T WIN?
Sen. Bernie Sanders is running for President as a Democrat, when actually he is an independent from Vermont whose political philosophy is Democratic Socialism. Finally, a Progressive. An MSNBC article says it is important that he run, even if he can't win. I think he can win. Progressives have ultimately realized that the only way we can get what we want is to come out and vote to elect the President and Congress that will get it done. Actually there were 70 Democratic Socialists counted in the Congress in 2010, among them Raúl M. Grijalva of AZ, Dennis Kucinich, OH, Elijah Cummings, MD, John Lewis, GA, Ed Markey, MA, Charles Rangel, NY, Maxine Waters, CA, and of course Bernie Sanders. You can see them all here. Now that's pretty impressive and a good number to start with for 2016. What you Progressives have to understand is that you are not alone. Our views aren't anti-American like some conservatives would have you believe. They are right for this country and it is time that they are expressed nationally.

(42,641 posts)It is all about the media framing the issues. The Progressive Caucus in Congress is larger than the Tea Party group, but guess who gets all the publicity?
Same for the Sunday morning "news" shows. They are always heavily dominated by John McCain, Dick Cheney, and Lindsey Graham.

Don't misssunderstand me, I am not saying Bernie can't win, I am saying it is going to be very difficult for any Democratic nominee, especially when we have an MSM that goes out of their way to refer to Bernie as a socialist, when it is very clear he is a Democratic Socialist, and they push books by republican hacks, that not only contains inaccuracies of Hillary, but outright lies
If we had a true forth estate with folks like Jon Stewart doing in depth interviews and news, it might be different, but this is not going to be a slam dunk
The republican nominee is most likely Walker or Bush, and actually Walker probably has a better chance as their nominee in notepad of bush because outside of Wisconsin, many people don't really know him, and he has the Koch billions behind him

(145,291 posts)The Kochs will be spending $889 million and the GOP candidate will probably raise another billion dollars. I am curious as to how once competes against this much money?

(13,218 posts)They think they can fool possible supporters into switching their votes. Even though his chances are lower than (some) others, it really depends on what his ultimate platform is and how dependable he appears to be. Of course lots of other factors come into play. If they're not liars, they're idiots. Welcome to DU, stay a while.
I plan to.

(27,787 posts)The correct question is"how will Bernie and his supporters convience people who already believe Hillary WILL win, not only that Bernie can win, but that he absolutely will win in the general?"
Hillary already has lots of supporters who are confident she'll beat the GOP nominee.
Bernie needs to convert lots and lots of them to win the nomination.
