2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat Bernie learned from Ralph.
Run inside, not outside. You may not gain any ground...but you can look like a team player in your effort. Love that Bernie is now a Democrat and is supporting the Party....except I think Bernie will bail from the Democrats if he loses. What then?

(14,255 posts)Democrats? Er, the non-Dino Democrats? What are you implying here? You think he has spent all these years working with the Democrats in order to try and get the nomination? That's a pretty bizarre theory, so hopefully that is not what you mean. Do you think he will throw his support to the GOP? Cryptic doesn't play very well here. Unless you just wanted your blanks filled in as nastily as possible.
Bernie is a stand-up guy. Wish I could say the same about all the D's in Washington. I don't think an airplane ride would seduce him, either.

Old and In the Way
(37,540 posts)If he runs as an Independent he gets no attention. So he runs as a Democrat and gets some attention. Great, we need to discuss what he brings to the table, but why does he run from the Democratic label for 30 years? Maybe because he is simply a politician?

(1,253 posts)Wall Street entity?......... I don't care if he calls himself a Vulcan. He's got my vote.

(1,253 posts)Mrs. Clinton is the very definition of "Third Way". That's not silly it's sad.

(12,697 posts)you sound like rush...patriot lol.
Indepatriot
(1,253 posts)Do you know how silly you sound?.......Attention DUers: if you disagree with the all-knowing stonecutter 357 by using a commonly accepted term to describe Democrats who sound and act a whole lot like Republicans you are a silly unpatriotic Rush clone.... duly noted.

I think you answered your own question perfectly.

(45,274 posts)He's better than that.
Besides, most of his supporters--like me, for instance--would drop him like a hot potato it he set out to do that.

Agnosticsherbet
(11,619 posts)Or stay at home and allow Republicans to have their way with them.
We have a government elected by a majority of those who vote. People who don't vote deserve what they get.
In the General election, I will vote for the Democrats, and it doesn't matter whose name is in the top slot. Any other choice is working to put Republicans in power.
INdemo
(6,994 posts)2012 because for whatever reason did not approve of the Democratic nominee.
Hillary with her close ties to Wall St will and the Corporate mafia will not bring these voters back.
Agnosticsherbet
(11,619 posts)They were fine if Republicans were elected.
Because if they were against what Republicans promised, they would have gone to the polls and chosen the candidate that was closest to what they wanted, even if that candidate was a very poor fit for what they think we need.
We have a government elected by a majority of those who vote.
People who do not vote have decided it was better to have what the Republicans promised.
We have a government that to work well requires citizens to be active in electing the government. There is no promise that the best candidate is going to be on the ballot. One of those candidates will always be better than the other.
I respect people who vote. I think people who go to the polls and choose who they think is the best person of those offered have done a better service to this nation than all the veterans of foreign wars put together. Some of them are gong to vote for people and policies that I oppose. But they showed up, and they did the most important job a citizen can do.

(27,711 posts)We'll see how long this "run inside" strategy lasts given his penchant for mouthing off. No one wants to be on the team of someone they don't trust. He won't be getting the support that say Howard Dean got in 2004 from Al Gore and Jimmy Carter.
Cal33
(7,018 posts)deliberately chose to ignore him in order to render him ineffective. And Third-Way
Democrats, naturally, at least partially followed suit. This method has been
successful for quite a long while, but not any longer.
Bernie has the tenacity of a bulldog. He doesn't give up easily. And he is gaining
enormously right now. I just wonder what things will look like in 6 months.
ellisonz
(27,711 posts)That tenacity is likely to produce a number of gaffes. He's riding high because he's attacking, let's see how he responds if/when the other candidates attack back. Hillary will not engage him so long as he remains a niche candidate, so it could be awhile.
Cal33
(7,018 posts)is saying or doing. This helps to put their own Republicans in the dark, which is one way of
controlling them.
Well, in 6 months we'll know better in which direction things will be going.

(75,480 posts)Bernie has always caucused with the Democrats when he was an Independent and I see no reason why he wouldn't still do so even if he goes back to being an Independent.
cascadiance
(19,537 posts)... but if the Democratic Party BAILS on its party constituent voters and the American people in general, like they have so many times in recent years with absolute CRAP that they are pushing like the TPP and TPA, etc. and expecting us to cheer them on like we would our high school football team!
Americans are starting to have enough of that. I think we're reaching that tipping point soon. I think that even if Bernie loses, it will be a close battle, and many people will be voting for him who have felt that the party has bailed on them in the past. If the "party" candidate wins, and doesn't deliver for the American people after being elected this time, it will be the start of either the destruction of the party, or a revolution inside it, if it isn't happening already. The next president has a choice of trying to follow in FDR's footsteps, or follow in the Whig party's footsteps...
