Concerns are mounting that huge checks in the GOP primary will hurt the party's chances of taking the White House.
Republicans could barely contain their glee when the Supreme Courts 2010 Citizens United decision cleared the way for unlimited spending in political campaigns.
But now headed into a crowded presidential primary that promises to be longer, nastier and more expensive as a result of the ruling some are having buyers remorse.
Concerns are mounting among top donors and party elites that an influx of huge checks into the GOP primary will hurt the partys chances of retaking the White House. Long-shot candidates propped up by super PACs and other big-money groups will be able to linger for months throwing damaging barbs at establishment favorites who offer a better chance of victory, the thinking goes.

While I have no pity for anyone who felt "glee" over Citizens United, I'm glad to see some discontent on the other side. With bipartisan support, this may be the first and last billion-dollar election

Bernie is doing just fine, and showing an example of what a candidate not using SuperPACs to prove a point and will easily get elected.

(19,537 posts)... as the invalid judicist activist stare decisis notion (set by a court clerk's head note) that has put so many bad court rulings in place for Korporate Amerika!
That could be the one good thing of the push back that Citizen's United might get is the opportunity to throw this crap out at the same time. If we don't do it now, it might be harder to get a constitutional amendment or some other movement in government to do it later.

(314 posts)Had Senator Sanders agreed to take pac and big donor money like every other candidate out there we would be playing on a more level field. Instead, Senator Sanders insists on running an issue oriented and principled campaign refusing to take big money and has upset everything.
But it is not all Bernies fault. True his refusal to be bought has the bosses worried, but that groundswell of support that is following him everywhere is telling citizens united that it can go suck plutocratic butt. (often their own.)
Is this how your candidate plans on changing Washington?
Chalk one up for Berni

(247 posts)If Newt Gingrich hadn't had the Adelson money to stay in the race while losing badly, Mitt could have pivoted toward the center months earlier, giving voters months to forget the scariest parts of the primary campaign. I don't think Mitt would have won under any circumstances.
