2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRomney's looks
Has anyone thought how easy it would be for Obama to win reelection if he had Romney's looks? Corollary: Has anyone thought how utterly impossible it would have been for Obama to be elected in 2008 if he had been a member of the mormon superstition, rather than of the christian variety?
For the record, although I believe Obama is by far the best president this country has ever had, including Lincoln, I find it very hard to reconcile a man of such stature buying the story of Adam, Eve, the apple, the snake, the flood, and the whale eating Jonah and Jonah surviving the whale's gastric juices. The fact that Obama willingly subjected himself to ostensibly believing in such nonsense for the sake of his country is what makes him a great man. It is also what evangelicals, in their finely tuned biblical minds, detect and abhor about him, almost as much as the color of his skin.

(10,103 posts)Now, whether that's his face or the fact that I get the screaming willies just looking at the man, I don't know. To me, he sort of carries around a walking-nuclear-reactor thing that might be called 'aura', but no.
The fact that whenever I see Obama with children, the kids seem to be happy, gives me a different feeling about the man, I admit!

(45,319 posts)He floats a boat load of 'work' on a sea of hair dye and cosmetics. Make up? Lots of it. Surgery? No doubt. Mitt is 65. 65!

But Perhaps I'm talking about his walk...
and apart from that, I find Barack Obama to be better looking than Mitt Romney,
but then, I've never been partial to 65 year old Ken dolls.

(12,272 posts)Romney is the Manchurian candidate, trying to look all-american but failing to capture any nuance.
Obama has to fight so hard to win because he is a Democrat.
The Wielding Truth
(11,415 posts)fables are there to enlighten the masses on how past families lived grew and dealt with their spiritual and fearful feelings about things that they could not understand. The cosmos of many Greek and Roman gods grew to be too complicated so one god filled the empty hole of a need for belief. If you are secure that you exist as a fact of a cog in a chain of survival then there is still a needs to learn to full fill and cultivate the development of the spirit. It is hard to find an atheist who does not feel in their soul the love sorrow and yearnings of life. He, like most all of us, felt his soul yearning for guidance and found it in the community churches of Chicago. He is not a fool. He is a common man, a boy who's childhood was rich in culture and care for the human condition. He shows his character in his respect for the beliefs of others almost to his detriment.
It does destroy the false face painted by racism and the Heritage think tank to really see our President as the Christian man he really is.

(21,925 posts)well-coiffed and manicured but not rugged at all. I'm not female but I've frequently heard it said that most women prefer a somewhat rugged look of a man of action. And men respect a man's man, like James Bond who looks good in a tux but who can take care of himself in a fight. Romney doesn't give off that vibe. He looks like he belongs in a safe and comfy chair in a Country Club with a sweater loosely tied around his neck.

(41 posts)He is not rugged in a traditional sense, agreed. But he is mentally very sharp and is not afraid of confrontation, he is rugged in that sense. Also, his lack of inhibition about telling lies and his fundamentally amoral character make him a formidable enemy. With a guy like this, I wouldn't want to be in Obama's shoes come November.

(112 posts)I think Obama is more handsome than Mittens, not to mention he has more charisma and swagger. Mittens, isn't an unattractive man, but he doesn't compare to Obama in looks, intelligence or personality.

(11,936 posts)The only thing about Romney's looks that benefits him over Barack Obama is the color of his fucking skin. And thats only because of the rampant racism thats still very much alive in this country. Me personally, I find Barack Obama to be a better looking dude. He is more youthful looking, more personable, doesn't have gawdy looking hair like Romney does. Romney looks about as fake as this OP.

(25,415 posts)But one has a personality that is fake and creepy. And the other one is personable, real, warm. I think Obama's personality makes him even more attractive, if that makes sense.

(22,897 posts)Let's face it-- he's adorable!
I don't think Nitt is attractive because of what's inside.
The same goes for the President, who is so likeable and smart and funny that he's very attractive, not just physically but mentally-- I just can't get enough of him.

(58,680 posts)Just before I exited active duty from the Corps, I was required to interview with a general, the Assistant Base Commander, to be exact.
I left that meeting thinking how much that general looked like a politician. Carefully groomed, well coiffed, uniform perfect, of course.
While I was pretty sure I was getting out anyway, seeing him really solidified my resolve.
Oh, and BTW, that was in 1977.
Romney reminds me a lot of that Brigadier General from nearly forty years ago, someone who's appearance is obviously selected to portray something other than his real persona. Someone who has to cozy up to wealthy, well-connected patrons. I look around the Republican Party and I see a lot of guys that could be Romney clones. I mean, look at Cantor, Rand, etc. They all look pretty much the same, like a bunch of Stepford Politicians.

(41 posts)I was referring to the stereotype Romney embodies - he looks like someone people expect look like as a conservative politician.

And what the hell are you going on about his looks?
