Obama's immigration trap

In politics, when the going gets tough, the tough have to get very, very smart.
After days of bad news, bumbles and bobbles, Barack Obama got smart last week. In fact, he got downright brilliant.
Bypassing the sucking, hopeless, sinkhole that is the U.S. Congress, Obama announced a new immigration policy, one that invokes an old, and therefore legal, power: He is taking deferred action on whether to proceed against hundreds of thousands of people who came to this country illegally.
It is not permanent. He, or any other president, can revoke it. And therein lies part of the brilliance.

(24,415 posts)(and how much such a perception was more or less a result of spin), his policy change was a masterstroke politically? How do we know this? The Republicans are discombobulated and Romney can't even figure out whether he's for it or against it, or against it before he was for it, whether or not he would change it if elected POTUS...........

(26,060 posts)(Bloomberg, I think) has support for the plan at 64%. That's pretty freeking high in these divisive days.

(24,415 posts)It doesn't sound like most of the Republicans actually oppose it either. They just can't come right out and admit it because of their base and they sure as hell don't want to be seen as giving President Obama credit for this. Instead, they just want to whine about him stealing their thunder- though they wouldn't have actually done anything about it while Obama is POTUS, of course (and probably not even if Romney wins in November).
