'O’Malley definitely gaining traction in Iowa, especially among labor union workers and grassroots'

from Sarah Beckman, news reporter / anchor for a talk radio station in Des Moines, IA:

O’Malley, Sanders win over workers at Iowa labor union convention

Martin O’Malley is definitely gaining traction in Iowa, especially among labor union workers and grassroots activists. Once again, he showcased his enthusiasm and energy to Iowa voters at the Iowa Federation of Labor Convention in the metro on Thursday. Though second-place contender Bernie Sanders was clearly favored by the panel and they were more familiar with his stance on labor issues like immigration and minimum wage, O’Malley certainly impressed the crowd in Altoona.

...his three-minute opener instantly yanked back the audience after a lulling presentation by last-in-the-pack candidate Lincoln Chafee. O’Malley is also the youngest out of the five Democrats running for the White House, yet he holds his own among the field of seasoned politicians. He touted his record of building up the Maryland economy and of his several major policies rolled out by his campaign so far.

“I am the first candidate in this race to advocate and put forward a plan to take us to a clean, 100 percent paid electric grid by 2050,” said O’Malley. “We can create millions of jobs in the course of building out the new infrastructure required to face this threat of our time.”

O’Malley’s answers to questions on immigration, trade deals, and raising the minimum wage were poignant and informed - he did not stumble or repeat himself like so many candidates do in question and answer forums. He definitely came prepared.

Though Sanders appeared more pleasant and personable while talking via video than his normal abrasive and forward style in person, it was still apparent that Martin O’Malley squeaked out a few new followers and interested Iowans at the forum. Again, O’Malley is strong when he is not overshadowed by front-runner Hillary Clinton like he was at the other large gathering of candidates in Cedar Rapids. Bernie Sanders is beloved by many labor activists, but O’Malley could begin to take some of those supporters to his campaign.
