But last month, Lil B took that endorsement back, and in a series of passionate tweets, he publicly endorsed Bernie Sanders, saying, "As much as I want to a woman leading the USA, right now it's all about Bernie ... he's the real he loves us."
The 25-year-old rapper is a former member of the San Francisco rap crew The Pack, who were best known during the mid 2000s for their Billboard-charting hit "Vans." He is outspoken about racial inequality, the criminal justice system and poverty in both his freestyle lyrics and as a motivational speaker, and he has given lectures at universities including MIT, UCLA and NYU.
(snip)
Sanders stood a few feet off stage and his aides said that he had no intention of leaving during the protests, but when the mic was not handed back to Sanders, organizers effectively shut down the event.
"I think he handled it very classy," Lil B said. "There's some times when these people, they feel the need to speak and they feel like there's an urgency ... I think Bernie let them speak and its the admirable thing to do ... He didn't have security escort them off stage. That's another plus side for Bernie."

and from Fawke Em's thread
The move on Monday night kicked off a wildly enthusiastic rally that avoided his previous problem in Seattle.
Sanders told the crowd (...) at the Los Angeles Sports Arena that "no president will fight harder to end institutional racism."
The response was a deafening roar and chants of "Bernie!"

After the recent deaths of several young black men and women at the hands of police officers, civil rights and criminal justice reform are high on the rapper's priority list this election cycle. He released several tracks addressing racial inequality, including "I Can't Breathe," in reference to the choking death of Eric Garner last summer in New York.
Peace to you, Betty Karlson

(5,751 posts)But rap is a musical genre that doesn't have any of that necessarily in its definition. Most of those days are gone anyway. There are still angry black rappers - and they should be, but they speak from the heart and it's good to listen to their feelings. I personally enjoy rap music that has a rap verse and a musical harmonious chorus, or vice versa. Just pure rap with a beat and very little musicality doesn't do much for me. But I'm sure most of them aren't big fans of Uriah Heep and AC/DC either, so it balances out nicely.

(12,041 posts)I am not a huge follower of the genre, but I do know this: there is a long history of politics in the rap/hip-hop genre. Rap often gets a bad reputation because many of the commercial rap acts do contain some really nasty and hateful lyrics, but those acts do not represent the entire genre. There are other artists whose lyrics deal with serious issues like poverty, racism, police brutality, war, the exploitation of workers, and many other issues. While you generally won't see these acts heavily promoted by the media, they do exist and they do often have strong followings. One of the most famous political hip hop acts of all time is Public Enemy, you may not agree with them on everything but you would probably agree with them on a number of issues.

(62,325 posts)Bernie seems to be attracting rap musicians many of whom are very involved in social issues and use their music to express their feelings. Killer Mike is another rapper who has endorsed Bernie. Very smart man, thoughtful and a keen observer of what is going on politically in this country.
Artists and musicians seem to be drawn to Bernie, he is speaking from the heart and they hear him. And most of them have very large followings who are influenced by what they say.

It's early for endorsements but he's racked up quite a few from the artistic world so far.

(14,733 posts)instead it popped up as a diary in the AA group.
Any mention of any black person who supports Bernie is anecdotal, does not represent the mainstream of black thought, is merely akin to claiming Bernie has black friends, and doesn't mean anything. Oh, and it shows 'desperation' on Bernie supporters' part.
We'll see who's right when voting actually rolls around.
Uncle Joe
(58,424 posts)Thanks for the info. Erich Bloodaxe BSM.

(14,733 posts)With enough time, I think Bernie will win over enough people, both black and white. Then all of the comments about not being in the 'mainstream' will be self-evidently wrong.
Number23
(24,544 posts)So your idea that it's been discussed in the AA forum, I haven't seen that.
We predicted weeks ago that given Sanders' incredibly low level of support in minority communities that every single solitary endorsement from a brown person would get waved around this web site like a flag by his fans. No endorsement would be too small or insignificant.
We haven't been wrong about anything yet.
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)So yeah, he cared enough to post something.
My point is that no matter what happens, the same comments about how Bernie doesn't appeal to 'mainstream' blacks will be rolled out. At least until he starts picking up significant numbers, at which point we'll get crickets.
Edited: Here's the link to the OP I mean.

(24,544 posts)endorsement. Except for Bernie supporters. For some reason, it really means something to them.
I didn't care when Snoop and Beyonce endorsed Hillary. And I'm sure that Ted Nugent will endorse Bush and I won't give a shit about that either.
And the bottom line is, what 1SBM posted is true. Bernie's support in minority communities right now is so low as to almost be negligible. That is simply a fact. Which is why every brown face that does endorse him gets trotted out by his supporters. Like I said, no endorsement is too small or insignificant. And as 1SBM said, it really is kind of funny in a kind of sad kind of way.
Uncle Joe
(58,424 posts)in the race, it's even 2 points lower than Hillary Clinton's.
Sanders' biggest challenge against Clinton is name recognition, 92% of African Americans are "familiar" with Clinton and only 33% are familiar with Sanders.
It's not surprising that Clinton's name is so familiar as a Bush or Clinton has run in 7 of the last 8 Presidential elections and the corporate media keeps her name front and center.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/184547/clinton-favorability-strong-among-black-americans.aspx
That's why endorsements like this are important to Bernie Sanders and his supporters, it brings positive name publicity.
