(135,425 posts)I don't think he's fit enough to run to the fridge.
Love Al to pieces, but his opportunity for national political leadership has passed. He is still a force to be reckoned with on climate issues--and I'd say recent weather patterns have vindicated him entirely.

(4,221 posts)Cruz and Trump both clearly have a BMI well over 24.
Al Gore is now a vegan. He had some recent pics with Pharrell (and would want to stand next to uber-skinny-minny Pharrell in any photo?) and he looked alright in those photos.
I'm just saying, I've been struggling with weight for 17 years, until this year when I've finally gotten down to a BMI of 25 to 26 (still working on it).
I also have a successful, warm, long-term marriage (26 years plus 2 year engagement).
Maybe I can finally run for PRESIDENT now!!!

(135,425 posts)glee in doing it. And the GOP will never gore (pardon the term) their OWN ox, but they'd sqeal like a stepped on piglet if we did it to them, because they know that our team is more sensitive about those sorts of things.
Where do you think "cankles" and "pantsuit" and all those ugly mockeries came from -- some of which have migrated over to this very board and are co-opted by people who don't like SecState Clinton?
Al Gore, unlike you, doesn't have a successful marriage. He got involved in a bit of a mess, and his wife finally had enough--I don't think there's any going back on that score. That's an obvious weakness--and it would be pounded on, forever, to demonstrate how awful he was. I don't see him fighting back against that narrative. It's too much.
Plus, I doubt he has the will, the desire, anymore. Age and time do change perspectives.
Congrats on your achievement! Maybe start out by running for local office....? Onward and upward...!

(135,425 posts)campaign....Happy-Glad juice for everyone! A toast to the next POTUS! Why, he'll be a shoe-in!
yourself. I like Al just fine, but he's got baggage. It's not "gleeful shaming" to point out what is as plain as the nose on your face. This is a board for political discussion, not mindless, dare I say "gleeful," cheerleading.
The biggest bag is his fractured family. It's unfortunate for him, but there it is. He's not yet divorced, he's been separated for years, and he's running around with someone else. The optics on that--like it or not, this is USA not France-- are horrible. His physical health is problematic, too--you need stamina to campaign and he doesn't look like he has much of that.
"We're more careful" means "We generally don't mock"--male candidates, anyway. But noticing isn't the same as mocking. Making jokes about it is a different thing altogether.
Context and nuance are your friends.

(16,916 posts)if a female candidate was similarly berated about her weight...
That being noted, you're right, Gore's time has passed.

(2,427 posts)There is enough ugly in the world already - no sense adding more, I can be a real turd on occasion but I am working on it. You seem like a lovely soul. Cheers!

(135,425 posts)WEAKNESSES that will distract from any campaign effort, and shitting.
Do you seriously think the GOP wouldn't leap all over him for those issues? To say nothing of the legal problems he had with that woman in the hotel awhile back? He's a train wreck in terms of his private life--his issues would become The Story and his message wouldn't break through.
Pull your socks up and get over it--it's a difference of opinion, a perspective. They are "allowed" here. Even if you might not like it.

(2,427 posts)Al Gore isn't running for any office. That means you don't need to criticize a good man over his weight and personal matters. Quite simple really.

(135,425 posts)Who knows, someone may have thought there'd be an announcement in less than a day--it's not like we haven't seen those kinds of shenanigans here before.
You've been here two months, and already you're telling people what they need to do, like you're an expert on how the joint runs?
Maybe you need to worry less about other people, and more about yourself. Quite simple, really.
Juicy_Bellows
(2,427 posts)I never said you needed to do anything. I merely suggested that might be ideal. You're obviously so full of anger and conjecture - you may wish to reconsider your vitriol. Cheers!
Edit- your first paragraph is spectacular! Who knows? Bob Stupak may run for Senate!
