O'Malley: I'll be a president of 'actions, not words.'Iowa City Press Citizen

Martin O'Malley worked to brand himself as the Democratic candidate of "actions, not words" during his Iowa Wing Ding speech on Friday.

The former Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor listed the string of progressive accomplishments he hammers on regularly on the campaign trail — increasing funding to public education, banning assault weapons, and a four-year freeze on college tuition. He followed each with the same refrain.

"We expanded family leave and voting rights, we passed driver's licenses for new American immigrants and we banned the sale of assault weapons," he said. "Actions, not words. We fought for the DREAM Act, we fought for marriage equality and we won. Actions, not words."

O'Malley earned applause from the crowd for his speech's tough-on-Wall Street tenor. As president, he'd work to reinstate a version of the Glass-Steagall Act, which limited the types of investments banks could make with customers' money.

The next president can't "give a free pass to the bullies of Wall Street to work over the people of Main Street," O'Malley said.

O'Malley offered up plenty of red meat jabs at Republicans for the audience of Democratic loyalists to eat up alongside their chicken wings. Republicans deny everything from climate change to vaccines, he said.

"Give them a few more weeks, and they'll even be shunning Copernicus," he said.

QUOTE: "This election is not about the big banks. It's not about big money taking over our politics. It's about US — U period. S period."

BEST MOMENT: The crowd cheered as O'Malley credited President Barack Obama with moving the country forward. "As a nation, we have come a long way since the Wall Street crash and the Bush recession of 2008," he said.

AUDIENCE REACTION: O'Malley regularly gets cheers from Iowans by quoting Bruce Springsteen's song "The River." "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true," he asked Friday at the Wing Ding.

"This isn't about big banks taking over....its about US."

In one sense, yes, because us has allowed a lot of bad things to hapoen.

But it IS about BIG BANKS, BUG CORPORATIONS and the wealthy and powerful screwing over the Nation and ruining the evonomy over the last 30 years.

That ugly but real fact has to be admitted, if we are do do anything besides tweak the margins.

You cant treat a disease without identifying and acknowledging the disease. Its kind if like like not telling someone They have diabetes, and just suggesting they be more careful about what they eat.

The speeches were limited to 20 minutes. Not sure what level of detail you were expecting. Each candidate gave a version of their standard stump speech.

O'Malley has the most comprehensive/workable plans of any candidate. They are all on his website for viewing. He also has the added caveat of actually accomplishing many of his goals while Gov of Maryland. There is nothing noble about saying tl;dr.

I can look that up by myself. And downplaying the problem of big banks in your speech means I'm not going to bother to look up your detailed policy proposal nor trust you will follow through with it if I do. Why would I? You just basically said "it's not as important as other things but here's my 130 point policy proposal on it if you're interested."

broken up. He complained that no one was prosecuted for causing the collapse. He stated that you could be arrested for a broken taillight, but not for crashing our economy. He promoted re-regulating Wall St and preventing it from happening again.

Thanks for playing.

Hillary and Martin have so far both released detailed economic policy, climate policy, criminal justice policy, college affordability policy, etc. Still no actual policy proposal from Sanders. He is great at identifying problems, not so great at explaining how they get solved.

I just prefer for him to address that larger context more directly.

Maybe he doesn't need to have steam coming out of his ears like Bernie, but something more pointed and accurate about the real reason for these problems. That, IMO, is a necessary step to articulating the real problem and harnessing public support for real reform.

'To fall back on' reminds me of what my mother said, encouraging me in my high school typing class: You could always be a secretary!!! FUNNY thing, that WAS my first job after college, and it lead me to law school!!!
