Related: About this forumBernie Sanders officially apologizes to Black Lives Matter (he didn't need to)
The Black Lives Matter movement has crashed multiple rallies for Bernie Sanders, and now the Independent senator from Vermont is apologizing, while increasing his effort to reach out to the African American community. Did Bernie need to apologize, or was it a smart effort to close the gap on an important social issue?

(34,111 posts)done them wrong, for what ever reason. Apologies are good things, they are not weak things. It takes a big person these days to admit that they did something that hurt someone else, especially if they thought they had been doing the right thing. I am not certain that he realizes that his big platform that speaks to all of us does not cut it for groups of people who desperately need help and attention brought to their matters. This would include women as well and all others who are tenuously hanging in there. BLM is standing for people being killed and losing their lives to prison in massive numbers, it is immediate. I hope this means he is learning. I think it does but time will tell.
I was not happy with the ending of this article. WTF? Will people NEVER learn? "Though Sanders is smart to appeal to the movement, his record stands on it's own and Black Lives Matter would be smart to focus their attention elsewhere."
Really? It just never ends.

Still, that last line is what everyone keeps getting so twisted around over. NOBODY gets to tell them what to do. My goodness, nobody ever seems to get past that do they?

(20,453 posts)Meanwhile, I think you're right
Bernie Sanders wants to make racial injustice go away. He wants to reform the criminal justice system. He wants to level economic prosperity so that every gender and race and economic baseline has a chance in this country.
He walks the walk and is true to this ENDLESS work for over three decades.

(9,289 posts)What is quoted is not an apology: "We wanted to let you know that we hear you, we want to do a better job speaking out on the issues, and as a sitting U.S. Senator, possibly introducing legislation and making a constitutional change."

(5,208 posts)I apologize it took our campaign so long to officially reach out. We are hoping to establish a REAL space for REAL dialog between the folks on this email and our campaign

(5,815 posts)Explain. I haven't heard a single complaint from an LGBTer that Sanders did not care about our community.
If you're going to make that statement, please back it up.

(1,846 posts)If it was me, I would be apologizing for whatever part BLM felt I or my team played in turning their protest from a Michael Brown Anniversary / BLM speech to an awkward, somewhat ugly mess.
I would also ask how we can include / coordinate with them in future campaign stops.
I would do a lot of listening, and make sure notes are being taken.
