Could be an artifact of an energized activist base. Or not.
Seems like there's a whole lot of dissatisfaction with the political status quo and with how Washington has been working.

No. People in Iowa do know. They care.

(7,008 posts)And Republican votes outnumber Democratic votes more than 2 to 1. Can't say if the State Fair straw poll is indicative of Fair attendee profile or not.
The last statewide polls put Hillary about 24 points ahead, and that's before today's Harkin endorsement.
The last National polls put her about 30 points ahead. Now I know some here have said that National polls are meaningless compared to state polls. So I guess logically a Fair poll carries more weight than a statewide poll?

Even so, Bernie's crowd was by far the largest, indicating this poll isn't too far off.

(9,527 posts)In 2012 Michelle Bachmann won the Ames straw poll but who also dropped out of the race before the Iowa caucus. Romney won in 2007, but lost the nomination to McCain. These things aren't representative of anything.

So the poll matches the enthusiasm of the crowd there and of all the crowds he's been drawing, which no other candidate has done so far.

Most professional polling agencies use a form of stratified sampling to ensure they are accurately reflecting the electorate with their polls. If you aren't doing that, your poll will likely be wildly inaccurate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratified_sampling

(7,008 posts)are meaningless compared to self-polling on Democratic website forums?
Republican votes outnumber Democratic votes on this State Fair Straw poll by more than 2 to 1. Surely you don't believe that there are more than twice as many Republican voters in Iowa than Democratic voters in Iowa.
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)And that makes Bernie's numbers even more impressive!

LuvLoogie
(7,008 posts)and Iowa statewide pols that put her 25 points ahead of Bernie are countered by this Iowa State fair Straw poll? Even though this Iowa State fair straw poll shows more than twice as many Republican voters as Democratic voters?
So Iowa State Fair Straw Poll demographics are not indicative of actual statewide Republican voter representation, but they ARE indicative of statewide Bernie voter representation?
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)How are these conducted? Calling phone lists? Land line numbers?
No one under 50 has a land line. I have not had a land line in 20 years. I do not see how these could be conducted over a broad spectrum of the country with any reliability anymore.
LuvLoogie
(7,008 posts)that there are more than twice as many Iowa Republicans than there are Iowa Democrats because of this Iowa State Fair Straw poll. You are admitting that. Correct?
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)or follow the link? The link says that more dems voted in general election 2012 than repukes. No, I do not think there are twice as many repukes as dems in the state. I do think twice as many voted in the corn poll.
LuvLoogie
(7,008 posts)But you contradict yourself because national and state polling predicted the actual 2012 outcome in Iowa within a couple of points. You just negated national polling and are upholding this Straw Poll over Scientific statewide polling in measuring Bernie's statewide support.
But I will grant you that Bernie won the "Corn Poll" if you don't count Donald Trump.
