"SNIP................
Clinton or any other appointed or elected figures cant be normal and use technology to make their lives a smidge easier, according to Stewart Baker, a former Department of Homeland Security administrator and national security attorney with Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, D.C.
Security is the enemy of convenience, and the effort to find the compromise between the two is always risky. Its not for the faint of heart and its not for amateurs, he said.
...............
For government leaders, the priority is to secure communications and keep them from being intercepted. The higher ups are going to discover that when they take office, theyre going back 15 years in time, Baker said.
The [technological] delay is built in, he said. Typically, we find the technology, fall in love and then we find the security flaws There are always undiscovered security problems. There are going to be instances when [officials] cant use the tech in their daily lives, and be somewhat normal. But then again, he quipped, A normal person doesnt get to be secretary of state.

(11,366 posts)I have both my work and my personal emails enabled on my mostly-secure iPhone.
You don't need to use a private server to do that.
Hell, I work for an Internet security company and we've had products for years that would have helped the government accomplish this and at a government rate.

(106 posts)Still have to have the tools needed for the job. That's why data recovery folks earn the big bucks.

(11,366 posts)it's not even difficult.
Not even back when she first became Secretary of State.
And, yeah, our data recovery guys all earn six figures where I work.

she could separate her personal from her work email at some juncture. Which she did. So it would be together and convenient on a daily basis till it was time to archive the government related stuff. Of course in hindsight it was the wrong thing to do. But illegal?

it was in a grey area policy wise and had nothing to do with the Law. It wasn't until it came up that some classified info was sent to her that they did.

(118,658 posts)Department it also would have been mishandled since her state department email was not secure for classified info either. The person would have made the same 'mistake'. And there is some question as to whether the information was classified at the time it was sent or if it became so after the fact.

(11,366 posts)I have three accounts on one phone.
NOT DIFFICULT.
If she wants to gossip, laugh at animal memes and trade recipes on her personal email, while still having her work email, it's not hard.
Here's a pic of my phone:
You can see I have my Gmail and Exchange accounts piped in. I can also check my Yahoo online. Not a big deal at all.
And, no, it's not illegal, but it should be.
P.S. I used to have my ATT account on there, too, but I got rid of that recently, so I am incorrect when I said I HAVE three accounts on my phone. I USED to HAVE three accounts and now it's only two, but my point is still the same. You can have work and personal accounts, separately, on your phone. And I'm in PR. I'm not an IT security analyst, yet I set up my accounts myself. It's not rocket science.
