(53,066 posts)All our representatives should, and all of us as individuals should do more. That includes we as white people not derailing discussions of racism to make it about our sensitivities rather than the serious and deadly racism that exists in this country. That includes not voting to hide posts about racism--particularly from the perspective of people of color--because they make us uncomfortable. That includes insisting we as liberals are immune from racist behavior, because we aren't. That includes LISTENING and taking action, not pretending it's all up to someone else or that a candidate we admire is too important to be troubled with the issue. That includes not assuming one is automatically an ally simply because we are liberals. That includes not engaging in false equivalencies, like "if someone said that about a black person" when mentioning white people; it's not the same and to pretend it is undermines anti-racism efforts. And that includes not telling black people you know what's best for them or that so and so candidate is their champion, whether or not he marched with MLK a half-century ago. That includes not insisting questions about what a candidate will do to address problems of racism today amounts to calling him a racist. It includes white people not making every damn discussion about ourselves.
Additionally, if one insists their own candidate should be immune from criticism by black activists and yet insists another should act, I submit it reveals something rather troubling. Anyone running for higher office is accountable to all voters, and anyone who thinks they shouldn't be doesn't understand representative government.
