By Schuyler Kropf - Aug 19 2015 2:39 pm
The same national buzz seen elsewhere in Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has now hit Charleston - so much so that hes moving his Saturday night visit to a bigger location.
Instead of the Burke High School gymnasium (capacity 1,500), Sanders appearance will be at the Convention Center in North Charleston, where the campaign hopes to draw more than 3,000.
The start time will remain the same, 7 p.m.
Superman is coming, said Rachel Reese, of West Ashley, a Sanders supporter. He is getting so much attention, its mind-boggling....

Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)It begins with selecting rally locations, often based simply on the number of supporters the campaign has on its email list in a given city.
Snip>
When a location is determined, staffers often simply turn to Google to find an appropriate venue by searching for coverage of large political rallies held in that area in recent years.
The campaign takes the basic steps of sending an email to local supporters, issuing a press release, creating a Facebook event, and posting a notification on Sanders Facebook page, which has more than one million followers.
According to field director Phil Fiermonte, it does little else to promote turnout. We have not spent any advertising dollars on these events, he said. Its not like we have lots of staff on the ground making phone calls.

(5,400 posts)Even in just my local area, when the Unions organize an event with the media in attendance they take care to not arrange too large a venue. Hard to overcome the sad/fail optics of empty space.
It's a hassle to move venues/dates as people have to change travel plans and you risk losing the local media. Lots of people need to be coordinated with. Sure, it's great news when you find out you can move to a bigger venue and so it's worth the hassle. And it's great for publicity when you can do so.
Other campaigns are free to rise in popularity and have larger and larger rallies. And they're certainly free to have lots of them.

Qutzupalotl
(14,327 posts)you'd be saying it's because she's the superior candidate and there's genuine enthusiasm for her.
I am sure she will have big crowds once she starts to hold rallies, but I learned in 2004 with Kerry that they are meaningless. Crowds do not mean committed voters. Many are simply checking out the candidate. My son and his friends went to 2 Bernie rallies and then promptly ruled him out.
But keep believing if it soothes you. I am content with Clinton poll numbers.
Qutzupalotl
(14,327 posts)I am sure Sanders will have big poll numbers once they start to hold debates. For now, I am content with record-setting crowds.
Cherry Creek Native
(55 posts)rallies. It'll be about the range of 1k-2k (at best) because Clinton will demand "donations" to her campaign, before they get to hear her give her insular stump speech designed to impress no-one but the 1%. People go to Bernie because they don't have to pay to hear what he has to say - and if they like his message, they either sign up or donate to Sanders' campaign.

The Bernie event In Los Angeles was just amazing. We waited for over an hour just to get in, and then we only got seats in the third tier of the building which was very, very large. Bernie's crowds are real. They are huge. And they are very loud and enthusiastic.
Feel the Bern!
People who think it is a trick should attend an event. I think Bernie is just amazed at his reception. I'm glad he is sticking to his principles, not engaging in negative discussion about others and talking as much as possible only about the issues. That is what people want.

Hillary supporters who have to come in here and trash Sanders for being able to draw a crowd 5x the size Hillary could draw are laughable. There's a reason Hillary keeps holding events in such small venues. She can call it a listening tour all she wants, but after her announcement having an entirely empty overflow section, they know there isn't the enthusiasm for her events.
